Got my hands on a Merc 1000 this weekend that was "siezed". Turns out the lower unit was totally locked up, but the powerhead turns and seems to have good compression. Now I just need to either rebuild the lower unit or source a new one. Problem is that the serial number (1854471) doesn't come up with anything on the various parts sites that I have looked at. Hoping that someone can assist.

Doc - Kyle / Curse has already talked to you about this one. It was something that I had posted in Sightings, but Kyle changed his mind on it. I took the opportunity to pick it up.

Looks like it's a 1965; the starting serial # for the 1965 run of 100hp motors was 1755459. There were no 100's produced again until 1968.

Any lower unit 1965-up from a "big inch" Four of 65hp, 75hp, 80hp, or 85hp flavors will fit your motor. Some of those have the more desirable 2.3:1 gearing which your 100hp will like a lot.

Also any lower unit 1965-up from an Inline Six will fit. There were a few years where Merc put an "overdrive" set of gears on their higher-hp motors, your 100hp wouldn't like those gears at all!

The majority of 6-cyl models, you'll find with a 2:1 gear ratio, i.e. for 2 turns of the driveshaft, the propshaft turns once.

You can easily check by turning the driveshaft 2 revolutions then noting whether the propshaft turns more, equal-to, or less than 1 turn.

You Don't want the one where the propshaft turns more than one turn, that's the "overdrive" gearbox. It was a 1.78:1 ratio, IIRC.

Ed - would a lower from a 3 cylinder 90 hp work? That appears to be what this guy has - greenbay.craigslist.org/bpo/5638640527.html

How much is typical "going rate" for the lower unit, and is there anything to look out for? I am hoping to find someone who wants to get rid of one with tilt / trim too. What years or models would fit the 65?

4 and 6 cyl 1956 and up will fit BUT watch the gear ratio.

There's a Merc dealer in Ancaster Ontario who also sells warrantied used parts he rebuilds. He specializes in 70's and up but might be able to help either way. Your dollar is worth about a buck and a quarter over here right now too. The company is called Marine Max Powersports Inc. Hope you get things right.

I am assuming that I need a new one since the current one is locked up. Is it worth it to rebuild the lower unit? I didn't do anything but pull off the lower unit, but there is no gear lube in it and the prop shaft seal is missing. My guess is that it might be rusted tight or there is a broken gear jamming up the works. From what the PO told me, he got it in this condition and had heard that they had hit some rocks with it. It does have a pretty nice gouge in it, but no cracks that I saw.

Haven't done it before, but learning is half of the fun. Thanks in advance for your advice and comments!

No - a 90 3 cyl lower unit is totally different.

I have just finished rebuilding a lower unit from a '67 1100ss (long shaft) that I would sell for $500 + postage.
