This caught my eye in my email earlier today. Just love the old K-Merc sign and the look of the white Merc on the back of the boat heading out for a speed run!!

Agree...my pulse just jumped a bit. That would have been a dream job if I had been a generation younger. I also remember seeing the many yellow test boats with numbers in Oshkosh and also motors running on the bulkhead for endurance testing. Powerboat magazine often showed some merc (and OMC) factory stuff. I read every word of those Powerboat magazines in late 60's/early 70's...my Dad got me hooked on boating...for some reason, my kids never caught the affliction.(maybe there is still time for that :) )

Okay,...Here is the Saturday Morning test question!
What model Merc is in the picture?

And,...The bonus question:
Did anyone see the Sasquatch?
:) :)

Gonna say 1960 Merc 600. Tough to see because of the small picture and all the exhaust residue on the leg, but the wrap and cowl are clues.

Dockbuster for sure Dave. See the snout on the leg?

Wonderful photo, thanks for posting it.
In my mid teens I would save my paltry allowance and buy American boating magazines (many times better than Aussie mags) and drool over photos like that. My dream boat was a G3 and dream motor a 6-cyl Merc. It took another 50 years before I would get them. I still consider each a work of art.

I can't stop seeing the sasquatch now (thanks Doc) but I think the lettering on the cowl top are the cast ones, not decals. Therefor I think it is an 850. What do you say Doc?

I have never seen a dockbuster in the flesh – what is the 'snout' you refer to gfg?

Does anyone else think it is a very large diameter wheel?
Ken.

Just below the pan on the driveshaft housing, there is a tube that sticks out and acts as an exhaust relief, only the dockbusters had them. The none DR's and everyone since have a slot or two. You can see the water spraying out of it in the picture. Could even be a 700 DR or an 800 DR but not a 850, they were full gear shift in 1963, the last of the white ones.

I thought the steering wheel looked large too. Could it possibly be to counteract torque steer or to maybe slow down steering input.
I have only seen a couple of Lake X photos. Could this be a test photo from there?
The sasquatch has a southern look to him. :)

I'd say a 700dr. It's for sure a dr looking at the mid. And possibly shocks that the. 600 didn't have. I don't think it has chrome letters on the top cowl that a 800 had.

The sign could be as early as 1957 I would guess . That design started with the 1957 line up. The black background oval was only in 1957. 1958 the oval was silver. I'm sur that sign was used from 1957-1963 probanly. 1964 issued out a new era of decals and signs.

Definitely not an 800DR, which had a different top hat, that had the top of the aft vent angled back - not forward - like the pictured 600 or 700DR.

N-yuk n-yuk n-yuk!!! I can't understand why folks can deny the existence of Sasquatch or Hairy Man, or Swamp Ape,...Or whatever after seeing this picture documenting his existence!!!
