TOPIC: Rebuild Season is in progress!!!

Rebuild Season is in progress!!! 7 years 10 months ago #129736

Just a couple of pictures as the rebuilding of vintage inline-6 "Towers Of Power" continue.
I have (7) well underway, and 'several other' smaller Mercs awaiting their 'surgery time' in the "Mercury Magic Shoppe".
Lots of work, and the parts are getting pretty spendy, but the classic inlime-6 Tower of Power still has a pretty good following.
In a couple weeks,...I will begin attempting to get caught up with my other Mercury commitments.
Including,... But not limited to,...A Mark 25 R&R, a Mark 58AE trouble shoot, a 1955 Mark 55 conversion to a Mark 55E, a '68 1000ss that needs a 'Full Monty",...And 'just a few others' that needs attention from the ole doctor.

Hi Doc,
Looks good, I've got only one lonely inline in progress. Thank goodness for winter where we can work on the projects without loosing precious boating time!
Geeez that shorty must be loud with the relieved exhaust outlast on the mid.

ah with the need for speed.. my search now is for a 140hp powerhead to swap out on my 90hp..
they seem to be a little difficult to find around me..
just out of curiosity what would a fresh 140 powerhead go for?

vintagerunner,
Currently I am 'over-booked' with commitments, but if that changes, I will post.
The costs of parts & machine work seem to be sky-rocketing, so costs vary based on a variety of things.
Will it be something I currently own, or track down & purchase,
What all needs to be replaced internally, do any or all of the cylinders need to be bored, or just honed with a rigid Sunen hone, How many new pistons, how extensive do the water-jackets & related components need re-surfacing and subsequently matched back to OEM clearance specs, does the customer want all new ignition components, does the customer want any of the modifications I do in efforts to bumping up performance?
Lots of things to be discussed, which I would go into detail on in a PM.

Doc

Thanks for posting !! Looks like the shops full and you're having way to much fun. I'm in the process now of tearing down 2 64' Merc 650's for my PowerCat 14-C project It'll be a slow process due to this project will take all my attention to detail and hopefully make some shows in 18'.

Travis,
That should be a sweet combination.
I have a friend that runs (2) of mine that runs twin 400 4 cyl Mercs that I rebuilt & restored for him a few years ago.
If I am remembering right, it ran low fifties MPH.

If you (or anyone else) ever need 650 4 cyl parts, I have at least (8) complete powerheads on the shelf. Not necessarily ready to run,
but lots of good parts. Not sure how many are pre-'65, but there probably some. Some use the same pistons as a 1100, 93 ci inline-6, and others use the same pistons as some 1000 90 ci inline-6s.
I'll bet George G knows which is which.

Back from the painter, with LOTS to do before the beasts are ready to RUMBLE again with their original gusto.
