Thanks Cal,

But I quoted a wise man. Not a wise guy.

Just swapped out the control valve onto my pump and will reinstall in the morning.

Planning to be on the Fox river here next week and then up in Micocqua for the big show. Take a ride over and visit.

Swapped the control valve out and reinstalled pump and filled system. We have reverse lock now but pump not budging the rams. Pump noisy now too.

Have not figured this out yet.

Got another pump and the numbers match the original and swapped out control valves.

Put it all back together and now I’m back to where I started. Trims up and holds it but no reverse lock.
WTH

Thanks,
Terry

Hey Terry. Surprised none of the Merc gurus haven't chimed in yet. I'm not a Merc guy and don't know how the system works but it's hydraulic, fluid either goes in or out. You know the pump is good. Is the pump supposed to reverse and draw the fluid back or is there just a relief valve? Maybe it's over filled so there's no place to relieve the fluid to? If you open the fill hole while the motor is up is there pressure and oil squirting all over you or just air. Might be air bound? Try running the up/down cycle with the fill cap off....put on your rain suit just in case. Just some thoughts.

Thanks guys and still plugging along up here in the holler.

Have the trim limit wired and functional. Also cleaned the contacts on the 3-button control and cut back and resoldered the connections. All seems to be working as designed now.

When I first reassembled the lower unit, I found I had a bad lower water pump base.

Threads on pump drain plug were corroded and was simply reassembled with a dab of silicon, and it held.

Later found a replacement pump base but never got it done and there is no time like now. Had new seals too and got it back together now but gotta hook up to water and test. Always tricky shoving that lower back in the housing and getting everything where it needs to be. But it’s simplified now without the mechanical reverse lock mechanism.

Dr Go,
Hope you can come up and visit. Should be a great turnout with lots of friends coming up from IL with real pretty boats.

Thanks,
Terry

Sometimes hydraulics can be as frustrating as wiring. Most times it takes perserverance, as you well know.

Technically,...Your style power trim uses 10w-30, but I've seen some with full of ATF and still working okay.

Hi all! Brand new to this site and in desperate need of help!

Bought a 1967 17.5' Northcraft with a 1969 Merch 1250hp on the back with power trim, seperate up/down toggle switches in the dash. Trim worked well on our first outing but coming back from our second outing I noticed I could no longer trim the motor up. Got to the dock and discovered trim was dead. The down trim toggle was seized and the motor was stuck in the down position. Not having access to any "what to do" info, I disconnected the top of the cylinders from the motor to be able to lift the motor up.

I have it home now and need to figure out what's going on. I'm fearful that I've burnt out the trim motor.

My plan is to:
-disconnect the up/down toggle switches from the solenoid
-jump passed the solenoid to see if the trim motor spins
-If is spins, I'll replace the solenoid
-If it does NOT spine . . . I'm screwed . . . :(

My question is . . . on this unit, how to I bypass the solenoid? It's a single solenoid unit, looks the same as the unit someone else post a pic of on page 2. I think I can identity the up/down sides of the solenoid from the wiring coming from the dash, but where should I touch the battery positive to see if the motor spins?

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks!

Your trim motor has (3) wires coming out of the motor.
The large black is ground (-)
The large blue is for "UP"
The large green is for "DOWN"
Connect a large jumper wire #10 or #8 size, between your battery (+) and the large Blue wire.
You should hear the trim motor running.
Then jump from battery (+) to the large green wire, and the trim motor should run.
If you don't hear any noise from either direction, the trim motor has failed.
If the trim motor runs, replace the solenoid(s)
Some only have (1) solenoid for "UP", and the large green just connects to the small green on a terminal block.
If you suspect your trim switch has failed, connect a small jumper wire #14 +/- to your Battery (+) and the small Blue wire on the solenoid.
If the trim motor runs, the solenoid worked.

I found a pretty decent wiring diagram for a single-solenoid Merc PT&T unit, maybe that'll help..........ed

Check the connections in the red connector on the trim motor that has the small wires that go to the dash trim switch.

I met up with Terry and his better half yesterday as he displayed his boat… when I asked him about the trim, he said he got it working in time just before the show. Though he may be busy at the moment, I am confident all of your help got him to this show in the Nick of time. What a great website full of amazing people with professional skills helping the rest of us so we can all get out on the water. I should have had a boat ready for this show. I am sure Terry will eventually share pictures with everyone! Thanks to all as I learn from different threads every day! You guys rock!

Hey Dr Go,

Thanks for coming up to visit and bringing your sweetheart.

Finished the motor in time for the show although I finally got er done on Lake Minocqua the day before.

And it took a little docktering to make it go. Did not have time to put it in the water here at home, but everything worked so we journeyed up to the Northwoods and launched. Had to adjust the knob on the shift cable to get in reverse but no biggy.

Then had a problem not getting enough gas. Turns out the Mueller tank connector was sucking air. Found the tank fitting was falling apart. I had a pair of 12” channel locks so I squeezed it back together and was able to get back port. It was brand new out of the package the day before.

I got a second tank but I knew that connector had a sloppy fit too and had sucked before.
This is a problem I had previously and complained to Mueller. They responded by sending me 4 new fittings for free, and now they all are shot.

Luckily, I had onboard an adapter I fitted to connect a modern Merc tank to the old Mercs. The female connector was plastic but the fit was tight. Pulled the dip tube and swapped it out.

Now the old Merc 800 is running best ever. Clocked 35 mph WOT.

Lets go motor boatin.

Hey Dr Frankenmerc,

Thanks again for your input. The last thing I did before I hit the road, and thinking of you, was to put the correct top hat on this old Merc.

Thanks All,
Terry

Good to see you guys had a good time. Perfect weather makes all the troubles trivial.
Never did like those "quick" disconnects on fuel tanks. Got to the point where I just connected the fuel line direct to the pickup tube and motor with hose clamps. Not much of an issue since the full tanks were always too heavy to put in the boat anyway.

Nice job overcoming those things that try to dry dock us! I did notice you had 2 vertical tanks hidden neatly in there. If you ever want a vertical Merc tank 18 gallon, I have a pretty nice original one I haven’t used yet because my boat is too shallow being both short shaft and a shallow center because of the cat hull.., it sticks way above the gunnels. Really good to see you and to meet your wife and also meet some of your friends. Great people and lots of nice boats. I will bring a glass boat next year… we need more glass boats there… but the wooden and aluminum ones were pretty sweet too!

35 MPH is pretty darn cool!
The 800fgs is just 76ci, compared to the later Tower(s) of Power that have 90ci, 93ci, and 99ci.
And 800fgs is just so smooth. One of Mercury's finest models, IMHO.

Thanks Guys!

Everything worked out fine and we got er done.

The hair was standing up on the back of my neck at 35 and later saw 36. Best before that was 33 and I was going downriver. Power trim is awesome on this old boat and taking a lesson as I go along on using it.

That is an interesting comment on the displacements Doc

It’s a good thing you motivated me to change out for the deluxe top cowl.

Hey Guys,

Mama Mia! back in dry dock now after busting the shifter cable.

I can’t find anything other than what Merc offered back in the day which is NLA.
Talked to a fellow up in the Northwoods and he says he converts Merc Gen I Teleflex cables for use on the old Mercs.

Says I can use existing ends at motor and control.

Also says he has original Mercury fitting to replace this Moller stuff that literally falls apart.
They glue in that metal insert that holds the connector in place and it pops right out.

Plastic connector on left OK but the metal one on the right sucks.

Any recommendations on the cables appreciated.

Thanks,
Terry

OMC naked pre 69 cables can be easy change with your brass ends. teleflex makes them

I've never tried to use the OMC cables Dave suggests, but I do know that the '70s+ Merc cables do not have the extended movement required for the old oval control box.
I am definitely interested is a success story regarding use of the OMC cables Dave suggests.
If they allow the extended motion required for the old oval Merc control box,...That sounds like a very cool fix.
Otherwise,...I typically repair the issue you have with silver solder.

Terry, what's the length of the cable you need?
I have a new one in a box that I was going to donate to the Door County boat yard sale. I also have some older ones that might work/ Would the old OMC ends work? i will mail you the complete box of stuff if you want. No charge! Gotta get rid of it all that's why I'm giving it all away. Bling etc.

Thanks for the response guys.

Dave,

This is supposed to be pre 69 OMC but not sure how to make that work.

This is more like the old merc style.
www.marineengineparts.com/seastar-solutions-ccx17911-merc-600a-series-xtreme-control-cable-assembly

Guessing the center brass piece simply screws into the replacement cable end.

Doc,
You mention “the '70s+ Merc cables do not have the extended movement required for the old oval control box”
Are you referring to the adjustment required in the control?

This is threaded and and is not adjustable on the new style.

Cal,

Looks like an 11-footer to me. All equal on opposite ends.

I believe the cable end with the stainless tube is original and would have been C-29564-11S.
C-20015-11S also fits FGS controls according to the manual.

on the omc cables, just unscrew the ends and install them into the Omc they are the same threads. IF the inner wire is to short just replace it with a longer inner wire and cut to length. I have not had to do that yet.

The email messaging here does not work.

Dave,
We may be on to something here.

Talked to Seastar Solutions which controls Teleflex now. Tech guy there says the control end tube does not screw off on the OMC pre 79 cables. The guy was with Teleflex 20 yrs and says they do not offer the naked cables.

John MacIntosh up in WI modifies the Merc Gen I cable by Teleflex to work on the old Mercs.

On the motor side he replaces the end tube with a tube he had manufactured to fit. And then will be able to use the original anchor tube.

Then the nylon gear rack he provides is routed out to accept the cable end as provided by Teleflex.

Should have by the weekend.

Thanks all,
Terry

John is a great guy and I have purchased a few items from him in the past. He comes to the National Antique Outboard Motor show in Tomahawk Wisconsin which is usually Wednesday through Saturday the first weekend of August. If you want to do another Road trip Terry, perhaps you can even find some original cables as backup. I have purchased lots of outbound goodies there over the years. Lots of good info on this thread from the experts!!

Hello Marc,

Yeah, that’s next weekend and is on my list for sure.

The cable shipped yesterday so hope to able to float Mama Mia! again soon.
John Mc had genuine Merc tank connectors too so hope to solve the fuel delivery issue as well.

Still in dry dock but having a better day than these guys.

Thanks,

Hello Docs,

Yes, its humbling to view something like that close up.

Those wrecks were on an industrial canal off the south branch of the Chicago River.
The boat that ran aground had severe stern damage and there is a lot of barge traffic down there.
Both appear to have mooring covers still attached so probably got hit while docked and that’s where they landed.
I asked around and nobody knew nuthin, it’s the Chicago Way.

The north branch of the river has more recreational traffic and there one stretch that leads out to the Chicago Harbor Lock that should be on everybody's list.

Cruising this river canyon that slices low through Chicago's architectural cityscape can be magical.

We renamed this building at Goose Island "Tower of Power"

And its got its gritty parts too.

Decrepit old swivel bridge and a piles of recycled automobiles and major appliances line the shore.

Urban Boating is a blast and we are planning to be down on the river with Mama Mia! next month.

Should have parts tomorrow and hopefully the old Merc running again next week out on the Fox.

Thanks,
Terry
