TOPIC: 1968 Mercury 500

1968 Mercury 500 5 years 4 months ago #140241

Good afternoon,
I have a 1968 mercury 500 serial number 2408927 with a couple questions. First this myself a very little weight in the boat the motor tops out at 4200 RPM at around 20 MPH. the motor is on a 1968 Star craft Polaris 16 foot runabout. Everything i have read says the motor should run at WOT 5500-5700 is this correct? It seems the timing is fine and all four cylinders are firing. Compression on all four is between 135-138 pounds. Could it be the throttle cable needs adjusted? I did notice the lower unit prop shaft has a very slight bend to it but is not severe.
Any help is appreciated.
Thank you Nick

make sure the butterflies are full open. what pitch prop are you using? boat could be water logged. I would think the prop would be about 19 in pitch. and YES 5600 5800 is best. 1 914 310 7086

made a mistake on the pitch I would think 10-11 in pitch not 19 that was a misprint
