TOPIC: Building a Frankinmerc

I need an engine to put on Ugly Peg,she is an overbuilt 60 G3. And she is real ugly. I have on hand a 66 merc 650 short in, well poor cond its been sitting for 20+ years, no lower unit, mag ign. I have a 69 long merc 1000, and a 72 merc 140. and 1 short lower unit I just got off of ebay. I think the 1000 pwr head will fit but will the 72 140?

put the 100hp on the 65hp tower and the new lower on it
wait for dave bernard or someone else to confirm the 100 hp to the 65hp shorty I think they fit

poneyboy, you are on the right track, the 650 & the 1000 stuff will fit but the 140 direct charged block has a different powerhead bolt pattern, would need its own short tower. SS

That is what I wasent sure of on the 140, I thought 1973 was the change on the bolt pattern and the change to DC. and its an early 72. But somewhere in the back of my head I was thinking the 115s changed even earlyer than that.

I have a 71 or 2 Merc 1400 I can check for you what the bolt pattern is. I know this particular 1400 does NOT have the dual square port exhaust. The 73 should have the dual square port exhaust and if you are trying to build a short shaft for Peg those intermediates are the hard ones to come by.

If I remember you built this for a 20 inc shaft yes? no? maybe?

Peg started this time with a 23" and I whittleteld her down to 19.5 to fit the McCulloch 75hp. Ive since sold the Mc so now Im needing another shorty to fit.

anyone know what the exact lenght the copper w/pump tube is supposed to be.....seems I scrapped the 650s last scrap drive........

The 1000ss and its exhaust extension plate will work just fine on the shorty 650 4 cyl DSH, but the 1400 is completely different and requires the rather difficult to find shorty DSH used on the '72 1400 and all Stack-6s beginning in '73 up to whenever they quit producing the shorty DSH for this configuration.
Some 800 & 850 4 cyl DSHs will work, but you would need to have its serial number and then go to a parts page and see if it uses the same powerhead to exhaust extension plate gasket as the '73-'88 Stack-6s.
A DSH from an 800 or 850 4 cyl of the correct serial groups that use the same gasket I mentioned would also need the megaphone under the EEP swapped out with a Stack-6 megaphone to allow the exhaust to be tuned and flow properly.
I currently don't have a water tube out to measure, but by measuring the distance while things are apart will give you the correct length if no one chimes in with the correct length.
