Last year I used a harsh cleaner full strength on the cowl of the 115 HP Merc and exposed the aluminum colored metal on the ribbed cowl.

Had a professional body and paint shop refinish the cowl and front faceplate. The standard Mercury paint was not that great (too much solvent and not enough pigment) per the paint man so they had pictures taken to duplicate the paint color by the paint company. Taped off the decals and used two coats of paint and then one coat of clear. Better than new.

Any suggestions as to what I should do about this poor "what used to be Blue Stripe" cowl? Motor is now running like a top after bringing together parts of several covering 15 different years and touched up with paint but the cowl just isn't working.

By the way...it has to be something quick and easy as I am gonna sell the boat and motor asap.

Note I took the pics in black dark with a light.

My cowl was painted and clearcoated around the existing decals, which were in excellent condition. Your decals look faded. One option is to let the new owner decide that to do. He will place much more importance on the mechanical aspects of the engine than the cosmetics. There are places to buy decals and a body and paint shop can redo the cowl, but the combined cost for you to do this may be too high to pass along.

Tim's current e-mail addy has been changed to: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

If you can't find a sweet looking used one through Tim Calmes I would leave the wrap as is like was suggested and let the new owner determine which way to go.

I had already emailed Tim before this post started asking if he had controls for me. Turns out he did of course and also gave me a great deal on a much better cowl than I had. Looks a lot better now.

I also dropped off the starter from my Mark 55 for him to tinker with in all his spare time :-)

Thanks for the suggestions.
