TOPIC: 1500 is running strong

Well,

I went to the airport and got some 100LL mixed it 32-1 (two airports right next to each other, one would sell it to me no questions, the other said no??)

So I went out and braved teh 49 degree weather and rain for a 45 min of run time. My motor is set way low, as low as it will go on the jackplate. (didnt want to spin it too fast too early)

I put my good 2 blade 23 cuped quicksiver brass prop on and ran around. All around great acceleration up to high 50 mph range. Possibly could touch 6omph but didnt try.

Next I put my good 25 p 3 blade OMC cleaver (OMC!!!) ran around still good acceleration and ran right up to 64 mph without me even trying !!!

With the motor bullet buried the boat wants to chine walk at 64mph a bit. It is much more stable with more of the lower unit out of the water So I did not push it any farther than that, Im sure it would have spun up quite a bit faster but I didnt feel like wringing it out today Plus I didnt even have my fastest 26 p 3 blade cleaver with me.

I have no doubt that this motor will run past the 70mph mark


My 1250 with the 26 cleaver barely ran 65 with the motor 4.5 inches higher. This one ran up to 60 with the butterflies only half open

With the butterflies half open I felt like this 1500 out accelerated my 1250 floored. Its pretty cool to have the throttles only half open and then trim it up and you accelerate pretty good. Have it floored when you trim up and it really goes !!

May have to wait till warmer days to see what it will really do.

Yes the boat is a Carlson Contender. Circa 1965ish. It came with a 1965 900 merc on it when I got it, and it looked like it was on the boat for a long time.

The temp was one thing. Those rain drops sting past 60

Way to go Conrad, good job bud! The extra attention to detail (balancing) probably has a lot to do with that extra power you're getting. (Cool temps don't hurt either, right.) I know you'll have a ball next spring tweaking and prop testing to get that last little bit of speed out of her, Nice Work.

PS - Those raindrops hurt at 40mph, I know 60 has to be painful! (My Harley days are a little fuzzy now, but I do remember a little, LOL)

NOW YOU'RE COOKIN'!! Looks great Conrad. I'll be interested in your results with the cleavers. I have a similar boat a 69 Switzer Shooting Star with a 1500XS. It is a scooped front with flat back bottom using the same theory of operation as the Carlson. The transon is fixed but very high, maybe 20 plus inches. Currently it has an SSM lower unit and does about 84 GPS at 6500 rpm. I also static balanced the big end/small ends of the rods and equalized pistons. I do have the original shifting gear case with low water pick-up and would like to try a cleaver on this to see what it'll do rigged that way. The SSM's are rare and I don't want to blow it up, so I'd like an alternative set up.
Keep me, and all of us informed. I'll be busy setting up my latest resto,a 74 Hydrostream Vector with a 1500 this Spring. Boat is finally done, it is now near showroom after a painstaking 2 years motor going together this winter.
If I could figure out how to shrink my photos I'd post em.

Maybe those new 6 cyl guys need a Lanyard safety KILL clip teather
on the dashboard. Don't want to get thrown out when you finally
test the BEST propeller .!!

Funny aside : I asked a older member "If he ever got a boat WET"?
. He replied THREE times in one Sunday afternoon .! It was up For Sale Monday am .!

I do have a kill lanyard. Only after taking a spill with this boat last year

I had it get away from me while testing a 900 merc. Went out at WOT and the boat continued on without me until the gas can flipped over and fuel starved.

I was scared as hell hoping not to hurt anyone.

Lanyard went in before the boat ever hit the water again.

A foot throttle or deadman is also good insurance on these seriously quick boats. I run a foot throttle on my Stapely & that only does high 50's, however most is on the sea so it can be very bumpy & easy to hook on a tight fast turn.

Great result though Conrad, you must be thrilled.
