And check out this lower oil... I had checked it towards the end of the season and it was clear - used it a few more times....I guess the seals are goners - and since this lower has a fixed crack and a busted off fin, I'll be looking to source a new lower

Either too much gas, or a weak spark will cause that look too. What do the rest of the plugs look like Peter? Was she smoking a good bit when running, and how was it running?

I'd say it's time for some seals and repairs, or like you said replace at least the housing in your lower unit.

Just my humble two cents worth, I'm no expert.

Well, she ran good with any amount of throttle, but I couldn't get it to idle strong - she would either idle to low and stall, or too high and slam gear shifts - I couldn't get it into the middle. Gas mileage was decent. At the start of the season I cleaned the points and reset, resync's. However, one set of points was more worn than the other.....suspect.

As to the lower, preference is to source a new lower case.

Poor idle is often a result of problems internallly in the engine.

Worn rings / pistons / bad bearings allowing wear on labarynth seals / reed valve problems / bad upper and lower crank seals.

At idle there is time for air to leak away from one crankcase to another with the resulting poor crankcase compression and poor scavenging and thus poor idle.Not always but the inspections should be done.

How does one inspect?

I have some towers that I picked up last year 62 / 63 / 64 and a 65.
