TOPIC: Prop selection for 1978 Merc 1400

I'm going to need a propeller for the Merc 1400... the boat is a Glastron SSV-176, bowrider. What type/make prop would you reccomend for general purpose?

Hard to guess perfectly. But your boat is 17 foot and fairly heavy. Id guess a 19 pitch for all around use. and a 17 pitch for water skiing and when you have lots of people in the boat.

Any 3 blade aluminum made merc prop will work. Or 3 blade stainless. Have your run anything yet??

No, I just am finishing up the floor and checking out the engine. Never had it out. It came with 2 props years ago but I didn't start working on it until last year. I'll go with a 19. The Rubex looks appealing:

If you still have those two props, try them out before you spend money on stuff. Do you know what pitch they are? You can find good used props on ebay all the time. You would be looking for a 15 spline prop.

They were damaged and I'm sure I wrote down the partnumbers at one point but I've had the boat for about 5 years and they got recycled a few years ago. I think I'll go with the Solas RUBEX 3 #9411-132-19 Aluminum Boat Propeller unless there's a reason not to.

I could buy used on Ebay but since I only paid $25 for boat motor and trailer, I'm splurging on a new one.

I have seen a Solas prop versus a Mercury prop, both in 19" pitch. The Solas did not seem sturdy - thin metal and flimsy. The Mercury would be designed and tested for Mercury outboard motors. Everything else being equal, choose the Mercury prop.

Picture is of two Mercury 19" pitch props, one with built in hub and the other for a hub kit.

I have used the solas rubex on my 1150, 17P for running in a bass tournament in a storm. It stood up just fine. The advantage is you can change up in pitch easily with a different prop, same hub. Make sure you get the correct hub kit and that you have the correct thrust washer on your prop shaft. Don,t let the thickness of the blades fool you, Metallurgy is key.

Well, I bought the Rubex and it looks like a fine product. I bought one off of ebay as well for a spare: it's a composite materiel. Has anyone ever used one like this before:
