Hooked up controls and trying to sync them on land.Put in forward and prop locks up in both directions.Neutral free spins.Reverse locks up one way but "ratchets" the other way,is this what its supposed to do? Or should it be locked like forward or is forward incorrect?Always thought F/R should react the same way, just in opposite directions.
My 73 Merc does the opposite of the Tower locks in R and ratchets in F.Both are "new" motors to me and have not been on the water.Would like to eliminate maiden launch headaches.

Things are operating backwards.

Sort of vague.Which unit is "backwards" Does the backwards start at the controls as I did have the 50's apart, not the 110.What is the proper reaction at the shaft in relation to gear selection?

By '1966 110 ss' are you referring to a 1966 110 9.8 hp short shaft or a 1966 1100ss 110 hp??
What you are describing is backwards for an 1100ss, while a '66 9.8 might have the evil shift that goes up-n-down through F-N-R rather than other 9.8s that shift back-n-forth and in this motor case it is possible someone has put the wrong parts together.
Either way,...BOTH of these Mercs should act as follows in the gears:
In Forward gear the prop shaft should click as it is rotated clockwise, both not turn c-cw without forcing the entire engine to turn too.
In Neutral the prop shaft should turn freely both ways.
In Reverse the propshaft should not turn either way without forcing the entire engine to turn too.
Forcing the entire engine to turn while your hands on the prop can be VERY dangerous - especially if the motor has been recently running.

Well I do not know what happened but the 110Hp and 50 are doing what the good Dr. says they are supposed to be doing.Maybe it was early morning confusion or I had one of them senior moments. I now know how they are supposed to work on land....Thanks Dr.

That's good to hear!
I seem to have those 'senior moments' from time to time myself!
Thanks for posting that things are working right.
