My next project is to mount a 1989 Mariner Classic "45" on a 1970 Harris Flote Boat Pontoon. It is the same motor as a Classic Merc 500.
The motor has PT&T. Also Auto Blend oil injection.
Got it from my brother. I think he took me. $500.00. But I'm a sucker for the inline 4s and 6s.
Not much wrench turning on this motor. He had to fix the ignition once. Right now all it needs is a little cleaning. Sorry no photos yet.
He replaced it with a 25hp Evinrude E-Tech outboard. Those aren't cheap. I saw the invoice. $6000
He says it is faster than the Mariner ever was. I'm thinking the Mariner was over pitched prop wise for the pontoon. 21' Crest. I haven't checked the prop to see what pitch it is. If the pitch is up there I will get a lower pitched prop. But first I will test run this one first to see where I'm at.
He says the E-Tech just sips the gas. B)

If the motor has spent a good deal of time over-propped, be sure to do a decarbon treatment to clean up any coking that may have accumulated on the pistons and rings. You want those old 44-cubers to spin up a bit - 5500 RPM, if not a touch over. Properly set up, it'll run circles around the newer 25...

I have attached a picture that shows how extreme carbon build-up can become even down in the exhaust. Granted - cleaning this area might be helpful, but I also had to disassemble further to manually clean inside the port baffle area and exhaust ports.
It was so extreme that I didn't know if chemicals would do the job.
Does anyone know that a decarb chemical could have eliminated this much carbon build-up??

Quiz question for the day: Anybody see what other nightmare I was dealing with???

Also Professer, Your suggestion about the "Auto
Blend" was on the back of my mind. My brother never had any trouble with it. But it did seemed to smoke alot.
