I believe all FGS inline 6 and 4 lower units have some compatiablilty. The early lower units like the 1963 do not have provisions for a tuner. I think it can be adapted to work.

The later 80 65 and 85 motors used a 2.3-1 gear ratio instead of the standard L6 2-1 They can be swapped back and forth if you use the correct prop.

I believe after 1965 the lower units were cast for a tuner.

The inline 6 lower unit came in several designs that are all for the most part interchangeable.

The 1962-1969ish was more blunt fatter looking. The 1970ish-1980ish lower unit was nearly the same but an inch longer from front to back and was not quite as fat. Then the last lower unit had the swept back skeg.

Inline 6's came in 2-1 gears and 1.78-1 gears in 1970 and 1971 ONLY. The early 4's wer 2-1 and later they went to 2.3-1.

Thanks Conrad . Watching your Videos got me missing my old Carlson Challenger . Ive owned it since 93 .I spent seems like a million hours in that boat towing kids with tubes and skiers And of course taking it out and trying to scare myself .When I married my now ex wife She was scared in it so it sat . Ive been gathering parts to maybe put it back together .Seeing the boats a 62 this 63 would be about right on it .I bought 2 63 100 hp from a guy . I know where theres a 150 Red stripe I might pick up it needs a lower unit .You wouldnt have a shorty Houseing would you ?? I do have a jack plate with a 4 inch set back .I could jack a long shaft up with that .Would like to get into the 50s ..

The only Red Stripe 1500 was the 1500xs and it came as a short shaft.

If its a long shaft red stripe is most likely a 1250, 1150 or a 1350.

I only own one dual port short shaft for the 1500 motors and its under my 1500 now.

I do have several old style short shafts, but they are in line for my 1100's and 1350's I need to build someday.

Good luck to you. If your Red stripe 1500 turns out to be actually a 1250 1350 or 1150 you can use the more plentiful 1965-1971 short shaft housing that came on the 650 800 and L6 motors.
