When I bypass my "Autoblend oil injection. Will the motor run OK with it unhooked?
Running 50/1 fuel direct to the engine. It is a Classic Mariner "45" same as a Merc 500.

I hate it nobody is giving you an answer here Dave, I don't know myself. I think there is a guy on CGOA or CGOAMN who has recently done this, I'll try to find out for ya!

(I don't think you have to do anything but plug it off and mix your own as you stated, but I don't know for sure.)

Not sure what the problem can be here.
You now should have a fuel tank and a single hose from that tank to the motor.
When done boating you remove that hose and let motor run till it quits.

I think what Dave is asking, Professor, is does he need to do anything to the motor other than removing the oil tank and lines and plugging off the connection. Good point about the gas in the carbs currently Dave, they'll be straight gas = need to run it dry with oil injection still hooked up or drain the carb bowls.

Got a response Dave:

Yup. That's all there is to it. Not the most reliable oil injection system, and a good idea to pre-mix instead. aka The Merc Nut!

As far as I know the " autoblend unit " is a seperate tank.
You throw that away as far as you can.
Fuel in the carburetors would have been mixed with oil anyway.
Then you have fuel tank with 50:1 and a hose to the motor.

Thanks everybody for your help. I'll premix my gas and run it direct to the motor.
PS The motor was winterzed with carbs drained.

do what the professor says. With auto blend you do not have an oil pump on the motor. If you did all you do is remove the shaft from the pump and plug off all of the oil connections then mix fuel and oil from then on out. With auto blend just do not use it and pre mix is all.

My 150 Merc has had the same treatment, who knows when it happened but it is missing the Autoblend unit. It runs fine on pre-mixed gas, has as long as I have owned it (7+ years).
The manual for this motor (aftermarket) warns against doing this in the most strenuous terms...HA!

On a 1989 Merc 40 Classic that I picked up(after frying the pistons when the oil injector failed(hose broke) and starved the engine...the pump is actually in the motor. After tearing it apart I noticed that there is an auger type pump that is built into the intake manifold and is driven the the crank shaft. The turning pulls the oil from the reservoir into the Cyls I believe at the rate dictated by the rpm of the crank.

But as everyone said. Just remove the tank, plug the lines and be done with it. Problem with the Merc 40 is that it leaves a big gaping hole(picture where the recoil handle would be in the cowl where the top of the reservoir cap stuck out....unsightly...maybe leave the tank in but don't use it if that is the case with the Mariner.

Good luck.

I said you remove the shaft from the pump and plug the holes not the pump big diff. Put the pump back on when you remove the shaft. If you want to remove the pump make up a blank off plate for it no biggie.
Autoblend just simply do not use it and pre mix but motors with the pump on the block you pull the pump off, remove the shaft, reinstall the pump and plug ALL of the ports. Then pre mix.

This is how my Autoblend is set up.
Gas tank with fuel line going to the Autoblend unit. Then from the Autoblend unit to the engine.
There is a cable that plugs into the engine from the Autoblend unit.
So my plan is to eliminate the Autoblend unit. run 50/1 fuel mix straight to the engine from the gas tank.
I just thought the engine would detect the Autoblend unit being unplugged from the engine. And not run right.
If it doesn't great.
And thanks again for all your help.
Dave

That possibility is addressed in the thread above from CGOAMN, Dave. ;)

Just got to clean up the leg and lower unit.. It has a little bit of scrunge on it.

The Mariner doesn't know it is running with out Autoblend.
I have run 2 tanks of 50/1 in it and it runs better than ever!
A lot less smoke!

Hope to have some photos of it in action soon! B)

It will be hard to let this motor go. But it will still be in the family.
My daughter is the new owner of it. She also lives on a lake where she can use it!! B)
Hope to get some photos of it in action before we have to put it away for season. We want to shrink wrap it. We got the stuff. :woohoo:
