TOPIC: Merc800 Kiekhaefer Year?

Merc800 Kiekhaefer Year? 13 years 3 months ago #41788

Hello FibreGlassics Forum Members,

Any idea what year this Merc800 Kiekhaefer is? It's on a 1958 Runabout (model unknown) that I'm thinking about buying. Any info would be fantastic. Cheers and thanks!

I wish I had the serial number... Thanks for the help though. Anyone have an engine similar to this?

That's strange. I'm trying to figure out the year and model of this Merc 700. Here are some pics, and the serial# is: 1578607

Hi,
Using the picture on the Main Forum, I would guess it is a 1960 Merc 600 with a 1960 Merc 800 front cowl. The changes could be a little more extensive without additional pictures to view.

The Merc 700 does appear to be a 1962 Merc 700 Full Gear Shift model. However, I am doubtful that the 1959 wiring harness shown will plug into the outboard unless it's harness has been modified or replaced.

Regards,
Joe

I agree Joe, it looks like a 700 FGS, but my '62 had a different starter relay than the one pictured (I think there was a slight production change mid year?) The serial number isn't matching up though???.......

Wonder if there's been more faceplate swapping going on with this one? Nice motor though!

The Merc 800 is a DR as it only has one cable BUT the top cowl should have raised chrome Mercury letters which this does not.
So without other pictures it's hard to say if it's an 800 with an incorrect top cowl or a different motor with the wrong faceplate.
Faceplates are interchangable.
The picture gallery does NOT show a 700 as the top cowl and lower cowl pan are the larger versions and white, which would indicate an 850 full gear shift wither a 62 or 63.

The crusty 700 (sorry :) ) is a 1963 850 FGS. 1963 I think is the first year they put chrome on the back vent of the top cowl. The 700 did not have that chrome trim. Plus the wrap looks like a faded out 850 cowl. And the ser # says so.

One quick way to tell a 1960 motor and a 1961 motor is in 1960 they had the screw down front face plate. In 1961 they started using the 1/4 turn fastner.

Now the 800 that is first pictred could be a 800, a 700 or a 600 I guess without further pictures to review. It is a 1960 for sure due to the way the front cowl is locked down with the screw type and it is a dockbuster due to the fact one cable is present.

I doubt its a 600 but who knows. If it has the old style lower unit like a MK 75 its a 600 If it has no shocks its a 600.

if it has shocks or thru hub exhaust its either a 700 or an 800.

I think its a 1960 700 DR with a 800 faceplate. The 800 DR had a fatter lower cowl (I think?). This one looks slender like the 700 should be.

So the 700 is a 850 1963

and the 800 is a 700 1960

Funny

Does this block have the Serial # stamped on the top of the block and does it match the # on the clamp bracket?

We have not seen a serial number yet. When we do that will tell us what it is. Then double check it matches the block. But you dont really need to check the block.

If the serial number on the mid says its a 700 the block has to be a 700 a 800 wont work on a 700 set up.

Still could be a 600 tho, but thats easy to spot. when you look at the lower unit.

Guys,

Thanks for the helpful info and feedback on the "crusty" Merc. Ya know, when my father gave me the engine, he mentioned it was 85hp. I argued that is was 70hp, based simply on the faceplate. Should have listened to the ol' man.

Otter,

look close at the faded mercury in the center of the cowl wrap. I should say 85 before the M in Mercury and six after the y in Mercury.

The attached photos is what it should look like.

Also the 850 was a 76 cube block the 700 was a 66 cube block.

The 66 cube blocks all had centered spark plugs. I believe the 76 cube block was the first to have off center spark plugs like yours does in the photos.

Some 850's were 90 cube blocks, they also were off center spark plugs. But the block would say Tiger above the top fuel pump.

Your dad was right :)

Joe has it . I looked on the main page and it its a 1960 600 with no shocks and old lower unit like a MK 75. Also the 700 used two white stripes close together around the wrap. The 600 used only one stripe around the wrap like in the photo posted here.
