Hello,

I have a 1970 Merc 500 Red stripe with a bad piston and a good mid and lower, and a 1972 blue stripe with a great power head but a very corroded mid and lower. I would like to know if these two powerheads are interchangable or if there is a difference in the exaust ports ect.

Thanks.
Jesse

Jesse,
If you make the swap at the gasket between the powerhead and the exhaust extension plate you will be fine.
That gasket is Mercury Marine part number 27-796501 or through your local NAPA it would be Sierra Marine Part number 18-0103.

Be aware though - that if you attempt to swap out the lower unit off one to the other it 'might not' work - but if things above the gasket mentioned are kept togehter from the same year and things below the gasket are kept together from a different year - what you want to do will work.
