TOPIC: Merc 9.8 water pressure guage???

Merc 9.8 water pressure guage??? 13 years 1 month ago #47458

I am new to boating so this may sound like a crazy question to most of you but I was wondering if it is possible to install a water pressure gauge on an '83 Merc 9.8? I did a conversion from tiller to controls and since I am not going to be sitting back by the motor how would I know if I sucked something in or if the impeller stopped working for some reason? I thought that a gauge mounted on the dash would be great. Is this possible?

Should be easy to plumb in a gauge from the threaded fitting on the waterjacket cover.
Tubing to a gauge near the helm.

Hi,
Although I do not remember ever doing a motor this small (I have installed many on larger Mercurys), I cannot see why not. Without a motor to refresh my memory, I would think that connection could be teed into the Tell-Tale hose as one suggestion.

Is this the fitting that you are talking about?

No
You need to look where the hose comes out of the block ( water jacket )

Hi,
Should this still be needed, I took this picture of a 1984 model showing the cylinder block Tell-Tale fitting. The Tell-Tale hose connects here and routes to a nozzle on the bottom cowl.

I am doing some work on my boat and I have another day or so before I can move it and get to the motor. I want to pop the cover and see if I can find that fitting. So, I am assuming that I will put a tee in the hose coming off of this fitting and run tubing to the pressure gauge. Sound right?

I can't help with the fittings, but if you need some of the tubing let me know Jon. I bought a 100' roll and have plenty left. You're welcome to whatever you need, FOC. (Free of Charge)

Thanks Mark.... I still haven't been able to get to the motor and look for that fitting but I am hoping to get to it by Sat. I may take you up on your offer once I find out what I am going to do.
