Got this guy today.
Faceplate says Mark 55A
Clamp # is 1553282.
Do I have a 63 500 with a Mark 55 faceplate?

The chrome wrap is also from a MK 55. So you would need to find the wrap and a faceplate to make it all a 500.
here is a link to it store.oldmercs.com/category_s/820.htm

Good to see its still white. Many were painted black in later years.

Did a comp. test and fired her up this weekend.
1.130 2.125 3.130 4.122
Throttle and shifting work like it should. Choke works properly.
Pees water.

I envy your room Neil. Looks nice. How many motors do yo have now? What got you started collecting the old mercs? You just started not too long ago right?

Well thank you Conrad. I am up to 24 Mercs now. Two years is all I have been collecting. I am a sucker for an old Mercury. I have 6 4 bangers and the rest are 6's. All but 5 of the collection run.
I am still hunting for a 1500.
What got me started? I saw a little runabout with a big, black, tall outboard that said Mercury on it. It sounded like a barrel full of pissed off hornets. I told myself, "I gotta have one of those".
My wife hung her head and said "Oh boy, here we go." ;)
I did not know the difference between a DR and a FGS. What the heck is a lonshaft? What in the world are two coils for? That one has shocks and that one doesn't etc., etc. But I am learning as I go.

I guess they started making 4 strokes earlier than I thought. I knew mercs were the innovators, but wow!!
