so how do these power trim gauges work? Whats the sending unit?

The gauge is basically a voltmeter, and is controlled by a rheostat mounted on the hinge pin of the sterndrive. As the drive tilts the gauge sender sends less or more voltage to the gauge which moves the needle up or down. Troublesome in salt water.

Unless you are running something that you can't see your motor, I find it pretty easy to just look over my shoulder and see where it is. $37 buys alot of beer!!
