Quick question for the experts.(I have searched but having no luck)

I am finished using the parts I need and removing everything else from a '72 Merc 650 .... I'd like to keep the classic thumb screws off of the transom bracket.

How does one get them off besides backing out so hard to break the
the pressed fitting or whatever it is?

Thanks as always,
Tim
