I would like to know what's the best fuel ratio on running these older engines. When I first fired them up ( sitting for long time ) I ran 24:1. I know 50:1 is indicated but what do those of you with more experience than I have recommend. I want them to last and don't intend to hammer them (much)or pull skiers, just cruise.

The oils have improved alot since these motors were new. My '63 Merc 850 has been run at 50:1 since about 1970. I, along with the previous owner, have always used Mercury oil. The motor still runs great. As long as you use a good brand of oil it will be fine (with alot less smoke and fouled plugs).

I agree. I always try to error on the oil- heavy side. I run 12 gallon tanks, and usually put about 11.5 gallons to a quart of oil. You definitely don't want to run on the lean side.

Thanks for all the replies. I think I will stay slightly on the heavy side also.
