For kicks I put my 1500J wrap on my 1250 today while installing dual cable steering. Make some more runs in the morning. Steering is awesome!!!

Stability mods so far. Jack Plate, Dual Cable Steer, New Swivel Pin, Cleaver Prop, Solid Motor Mounts. All will come to gether to make me safe and happy I hope.

Ill report my luck if it dont rain tomorrow.

Well its video, not good video but video of it today. Not quite 62mph with more left. Each time in the video its just coming up to 60ish then I back out. It has some left in it. Just to the right of where I was videoing the wind was wrapping around and causing decent sized waves so I couldnt do a full WOT pass.

NEW VID

I took the carlson contender out with the 1250 today cause it was pretty calm. Had a buddy that wanted a ride so he shot some video.

It ran me and him up stream at 60 mph. And just me I recorded 66.5 on one GPS and my second GPS said 68. There is some lag to GPS's some times so they will not get you at full speed if you dont hold it for a bit of a time.

Id say I was knocking on the 65 mph door today. When I had my fast run it was still accelerating but this thing does not turn and I had to make the bend in the river

Its marked 25 pitch and its and OMC over the hub cleaver. Looks like someone hammered extra cup into it at one time. RPM unknown? Tach broke. Id love to know tho...... I bet it closing in on 6k

Re:1500 J/xs mock up 14 years 7 months ago #6871

Probably at least...highest my 1350 has ever seen was 5600 and it wasnt screaming like yours!

Id love to find one of those props to try though...all mine are just standard through hub exhaust props. Its on a boat thats about 1.5-2 feet longer and probably a little bit heavier than your Carlson but im nowhere near 60(51-52 on a good day in smooth water with minimal load).

I run the motor so high though, id probably really benefit from a cleaver style since they like to be at or just slightly above the waterline. Someday...

I run my motor 4.5 inches up right now. Im going to try 5-6 inches next time. Water pressure guage on the cooling system is a must at that height.

My props are 1/3 out of the water

Keep in mind, choppers lift the bow, cleavers lift the stern. That Carlson doesn't need any bow lift, cleaver works properly. Longer and heavier, needing trim to float the bow, stick to round ear. Got a pic of the transom/lower unit height at the keel?

The cav plate is about 2...2.5 inches above the keel. Ill get a pic of it...

Its on the boat in my avatar...1970 Challenger(nearly a flatbottom...very, very slight V profile). It requires ALOT of upward trim to get any real speed out of it...

Definitely need a chopper profile. Merc sold them for the inlines in the 70's and 80's. Worth finding. Needing a lot of trim could also mean you need a setback plate (jackplate) with about 4-6 inches of setback. That will reduce the amount of trim you need to get the bow to float. Too much trim can rob speed- she should run slightly bow up with minimal uptrim, so the gearcase doesn't drag thru the water at an angle. Love the boat, by the way!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the info...I'll start another thread on it and maybe you can give me some more insight to goin FASTER!

Milkdud, we need more video! I keep watching that one over and over...the sound of that merc screaming at the top of it's lungs puts a smile on my face!!

Here is the Switzer equivalent to the Contender. This is a 69 Shooting Star with a 76 XS and a SSM lower. Motor is high on a built up factory transom with factory tie bars. Does about 82 to 84 depending on wind ripple/direction. like yours this DOES NOT TURN either!!!
I love your video, nice hole shot! It takes quite a while for me to plane, the prop used is about 8 inches in dia, 17 pitch 1:1 ratio lower, you crank it to 5000 and let it sit there and then it will finally plane off. Bounces like hell till 50 or so and starts to fly the bow at about 65 then picks up speed quick till just over the 80 mph mark. Funny I was going to put on 1250 cowls on the XS for the correct year look you went the other way, XS cowls on a 1250!

Randy did they rate the Shooting star for 125-150 hp? My contender is only rated for 85. Not sure I want to go much faster than high 60's with this thing. I have a 1500 J block 1975(the cowls you see on the 1250) but man this thing at 70ish would be haul'n I cannot imagine 80 mph in a boat like this.

Ill get more video when I get it out next time.

A boat will go as fast as the RIGGING will SAFELY run it. Your Contender, according to your first post, has the stuff. Hope you are also using a lanyard kill switch. About 10 years ago, a boat FLEW (!!!!!!!!!) past me, I was just able to I.D. it as a 14' Checkmate ( I used to own one) with a Merc V-6 (!!!!!!!) screaming its song. Saw it beached later, it had one center mounted seat and primo hardware/rigging. Owner said it would do mid-90 mph, but he was very careful to watch the water at speed. I can only imagine what a wave would do to something like that.

Jeff you need to try a chopper id guess. Ive got a 24 and 26 pitch but they dont work as well on my boat.

look for a "small ear" or "inline" chopper. they are the same. They are smaller ear and 14 inch diameter vs the larger choppers on the V-6 motors

these are the part numbers to look for

Right Hand Rotation
48 75766 A4 18p
48 75768 A4 20p
48 75770 A4 22p
48 75772 A4 24p
48 75774 A4 26p
48 76108 A4 28p
48 78800 A4 30p

48 75766 A5 18p
48 75768 A5 20p
48 75770 A5 22p
48 75772 A5 24p
48 75774 A5 26p

Thanks for the info!! Whats the differences between the A4 and A5's??

I would imagine somewhere around a 22-24 would work pretty well the way its currently setup.

Randy:
I am curious how you are reading your speed?
Is that with a water pickup speedo or are those GPS
readings?
