hi, a quick question, can i replace the green rectifier with the newer type shown in the picture?

Yup. Just devise a way to mount it and make the proper connections. The later-style diode-type rectifiers are much more efficient than the old silicon-wafer-type, so you'll get better charging action as well.

use a good peice of aluminum to mount and it acts as a heatsink.

Not sure, but I think you should treat the old one as hazardous waste. Kind of looks like the selenium rectifiers from old amps which are hazardous waste.
