I got my wiring done and started the mark 35a today!!
But...it has a very high "idle" when the idle screw seems turned all the way down. Am i missing something to make it go lower?

Second...what is the hole in lower unit for? (weep hole thing with fluid coming out)

I know a lot of you know this motor so...

Does it automatically run on high idle till it warms up? If not, what would be the cause of the high idle with idle screw all the way down?

I have attached a picture of the Idle Stop Set-Screw Dave B is referencing.
Loosen the lock nut, then back it off counter-clockwise to the desired idle RPM.
You most likely will need to disconnect the throttle cable and re-adjust the barrel on the control cable for this all to work.

I checked the idle stop set screw before i posted and that was not the culprit.

Is the screw on the carb near the mouth of the carb the screw i need to adjust? Turn the screw out for richer, correct?

I do get a pop out of carbs every 5 seconds or so = Lean

So i want to replace the impeller but when i googled it i found a thread that said....

"There IS a Tell-Tale on that motor, but it's plugged up (normal). If you look (and poke) under the left rear of the cowling you'll find it."

Anyone know what exactly that person is talking about?
Are they saying under the cowling is actually under the cowling or lower unit area below cowling? Why is it normal?

If someone could post a pic i'd appreciate it. Below is a pic of what i'm looking at.

iy is a 1/8in hole located just above the last nut on the left in the pic.just tells you the pump is working but they do clog and the pump still is working fine.

Thanks guys. It was definitely plugged up (almost couldn't see it) so i cleaned it out the best i could with a 1/8" drill bit.

Is it easy to describe how to install a secondary tell-tail?
If so i'd like to know...
If not i'll wait to see if my tell-tail "tells" or not.

It's probably best to install a cylinder head temp gauge huh?

There is no provision on that motor to prevent major engine damage / dynamic halt should it overheat !!--A wise man would install a new impeller before going out on the water.

Also works as a good place to hook up a water pressure gauge for the dash. Peace of mind = Priceless!

Looks like i need to rebuild carbs, i have to have the choke on to keep it running and adjusting the screws does not help.

Is the original float cork?

Is there a good starting point for the screws once back together?

And..can i replace fuel line and fittings using good fuel line and fittings from hardware store?

clean the brass idle tube and set the adjusting screw at 1 1/2 out from lightly seated. is a good starting point.

You can, and I'm sure a lot of folks do. Two things to keep in mind though;
1 - Marine fuel hose is USCG and AYBC approved because it's built to higher standards, it's a safety issue.
2 - Be careful that the fittings you buy don't have a smaller ID than the ones you're replacing, which could restrict the fuel flow.
IMHO it's better to spend a few extra dollars and buy these from a reputable marine parts source. This info/advise was given to me by a family owned Merc specialist company that's been in business longer than I've been around, and I trust them implicitly. ;)

Can i just clean the carbs and put back together with new gaskets or do i have to use rebuild kit? The rebuild kit looks like it's just gaskets and needle/seat. My needle/seat are in great condition and filter screen looks new. Looking to save a buck or two.

I've done scooter carbs and made my own gaskets without needing rebuild kits.

Just get a couple of the carb packing kits. They have the gaskets you'll need to reassemble the carbs and aren't extremely expensive.
