I'd say start here and theres alot more to find out. Think you should post what your average gross weight will be most the time and your uses to get best answer from forum members.

I'd guess a 15, 17 or 19 pitch depending on how loaded the boat is and what style MFG you have.

I realize this is an old discussion, and the original poster has probably long stopped following it, but for those interested, here is very complete, and valuable, list of links to Mercury's old prop charts.

www.maxrules.com/propindex.html

The Merc 1000 1968-69 can be found. Note that all Merc props ending in "A3" are uncupped. The "A4" props are cupped, as are most modern props, so in using these old charts, a drop down of 1" or 2" of pitch is usually needed from the "A3" figures when installing a modern cupped prop of any manufacturer.

The only way to find the right prop is with a water test and and accurate tachometer. I think a 17 would be a good start, but there are so many variables to deal with. Remember to pick a prop that puts you in the top of the rpm range, Mercs do not like to be lugged! Figure on 200 to 250 RPM change per inch of pitch change that you do. Good luck!!
