TOPIC: 72' Merc 500, Impeller rusted/fused to drive shaft

72' Merc 500, Impeller rusted/fused to drive shaft 11 years 4 months ago #79925

Hi Guys(gals too! LOL):
Need some help here. Trying to replace water impeller and the impeller won't slide off drive shaft. I've soaked it in PB rust blaster, tapped it, tried a pliers to pull it off and it won't budge (tears up rubber on impeller no movement of whole impeller).
Am I doing something wrong?
All the videos show the impeller just sliding off the drive shaft. HelP!

It's rusted to the shaft, take a chisel or sharpened screwdriver to it and split the brass insert. Then clean up the shaft real good, so that the new impeller will slide right down with no binding. You'll probably waste the impeller key, it's a good idea to replace anyway, and they're cheap.
