Wondering about this , as I am rebuilding 2 shelf carbs.. I just don't want the drama of being 2 turns out of setting when it comes to fine tuning... A bunch of spare pieces will usually make a fine running piece of equipment, with the right tuning.

Just went through this on a 1967 Merc 500 Thunderbolt. Set about 1 and one half turns out then be prepared to set the mixture rich when you get to setting it up (in gear) on the water. Setting to the rich side makes all the difference in a reliable transition from neutral to forward or reverse.

Hope that helps,
Bill
