TOPIC: Crankshaft nut for 63 merc1000

Crankshaft nut for 63 merc1000 14 years 6 months ago #8463

Any idea where I could find one of those thin lock nuts for the top of the crank? Not having the right nut, and not torquing it to spec may very well have led to the problem I had with my motor.

Thanks for any help!

Hey Frank I use about 1 drop of the BLUE Loctite product on mine. If you use the RED Loctite you will have to heat it to remove!
Clean the threads with some brake cleaner first to remove any oil / dirt residue. Hope this helps.

Hey Frank, if you can't find one locally I'll bet Joe Jr. would either have one, or be able to get you one. I posted about his new website yesterday, or I have his cell number if you need it. I am so glad you got everything sorted out! I think we all breathed a collective "sigh of relief"!!! I'm going to the lake later, but will be around for a while yet if you need that number just let me know, k?

Mark, great idea. I never even though about Joe Poole, foolish me! He's a good guy. By the way, da weather is here now, and it's gonna be crummy a while till we get closer to home. Supposed to be decent and sunny there today.

Pete, I like the blue loctite idea. I know about all their different colors, and have used blue on other stuff with this motor. I'll see if my local merc dealer has a nut, and if not hit Joe up. Sooner I get one, the better!
