on monday my mother in laws bird feeder was dragged off by a black bear, and her humming bird feeder was flattened.
well last night i forgot to close my basement door, thats where my table saw is that im using to work on the house, well when lorraine and i went down our outside steps,we saw that our garbage can was dragged into the middle of the yard, then i saw the door was left open,i knew exactly what happened, and told my wife to back up,back up the stairs,i went into the basement(very slowly, lol) and saw the bear paw prints in the saw dust.
he wasnt very big, probably only a year and 5 months old, going by the size of the tracks.

when a bear cub reaches his 2nd spring, momma bear shoos him off to go on his own,so that she can mate again.

i kind of feel bad for the little fella, hes just trying to get by without mom.john

John
I have an image in my head of a bear skin rug laying in front of that new fireplace you just built. With sawdust on it's paws!

neil, lol, but i already have 2 that hung on the wall and a hide.

little fin sure we can, lol, ive already had wolves, racoons and a groundhog for pets, lol.

andrew ,i think i would rather have the bear in my basement, then a scorpion, lol,i know bears a lot better.lol.

i was just thinking the night this happened i was taking a nap,and my wife doing something i don't remember what...but we do remember hearing an awful bang then a noise like a jet going over i looked out side but couldnt see anything, but i was looking up,and the bear was where i couldnt see it,that sound had to have been the bear knocking over and dragging our garbage along the concrete sidewalk.
next time i will know,john

well... he has been back 2 more times at least,i found our garbage can on its side and the garbage scattered, plus my wifes bird feeder broken, its our own fault.
we should have put the cans inside, and the bird feeders away.
when i had wolves as pets(one at a time)we never had a bear problem, but since yukon our white wolf died, this bear is not afraid.
my wife leaves for work when its still dark,i have to walk her to the car with a 357 mag.
the last thing i want to do is hurt this bear,so the garbage has to go inside the basement.
he has been hanging around, last week he took a crap right in front of the big window in the porch/room addition,he must have liked the tv show we had on,lol.
he is very smart, all of us in the area have been running out f humming bird food in the feeders, the neighbor said he watched it tip his humming bird feeder just enough to drink the nectar out of the feeder, without breaking it.
this is what we found at 4:30 am.john
if you notice the bottom of the feeder is ripped off,and the steel leaves are bent. the feeder is crushed in on the sides.

Just remember John, any bear who becomes used to people ends up a dead bear. It is simply a matter of time. We used to have feeders too, but 5 bears in one day was enough for us.
My son now 15, was walking to the car one morning to put his backpack and lunch in. Walking back to the house there was a bear between him and the door to the house. The bear was on the other side of a large bush and he didn't see him walking out. He was 11 at the time.
The bear just walked away slowly until I went and chsed him away.
Luckily it was a very small bear.

i use to carry ash cans in my tackle box when fishing on the delaware river just north of dingmans ferry, pa. saw bears swimming the river on a few occasions and always worried what i would do if the the old 18 wouldn't start to put some distance between us. felt a lot safer with those explosives on hand. ron

Yes I think you need to take some steps into scaring them away. Last week I had to trap two coons that were dining at the Local Lorigan Coon Restaurant Garbage can. It sure does get tiring cleaning up after the hungry buggers. I got one and thought I was done until next morning it was out again. Two large males in three days. This has been going on for weeks. Can you hook a car horn up to a switch in the lid with a car battery? I would try something like that. At least you could shoot out the window if that don't scare them.

You might want to get some bear spray. Back home every one who goes out into the woods up at the ranch carrys it nowadays. If you do just make sure it is real bear spray and not the cheap auto store peper spray. The stuff really works and they will not be hanging around after they get a shot of it acouple of times.Better safe than sorry. Skip.

yeah i used to hunt bear, and the worst ones are the ones that are used to people.
i just found out its more dangerous than i thought,it turns out its a small sow with 5 month old cubs, the neighbor saw them yesterday.
i put our garbage cans in the basement, and took down the feeders.
now the problem is to get all the folks that live around here to do the same.

i have been escorting my wife to the car when she goes to work, its still dark out.

we have to be careful not to get between mom and the cubs.
once while turkey hunting with my dad,we had a big boar ,black bear make us back out of the woods,i went back in later and found out that someone was feeding it roadkill, among other things.
we got video of a sow with cubs at the same location, popping her jaws at us and drooling, about 90 feet away from us.

John I have the answer. Next time she shows up take one of those bearskin rugs out and show it to her and say,"See this, made from your Uncle Jack." Get the Hell out of here now.
