TOPIC: 75hp flying scott lower unit

Hi everyone,

On my 75hp scott motor I can't seem to get my lower unit to fully meet up to the housing above it. When I attach the two, the bearing cap on the shaft is holding it up about 1/16". I have the gears and the shaft cap on it. I can tighten the two pieces but afterwards I can't turn either the shaft or the gears. Any idea why?

It appears the bearing is not all the way down touching the pinion gear

Yeah I noticed that too, and the width is about the same, but the pinion won't go on any more. Can I tap the bearing down a little or will I bust it?

Tap down the bearing. hit only on the portion of bearing next to the drive shaft. It should bottom out on pinion gear

Well I tapped down on (what I guess is a bushing inside the bearing?) With no luck, then I put it in the housing and tapped up with no luck. I can't tell if it moved at all. It seems like the gaps are smaller but I can't tell.

Is the race for the pinion bearing going down into lower housing enough? The bearing probably would not move if every thing was free when the lower unit was taken apart. Is the bushing on the bearing making contact with the pinion gear?

You were right, the bearing and the bushing were not down far enough on the shaft. It took a strong punch on it to get it to slide down that 1/16 of an inch but now it went back together.
Now I am having a bitch of a time getting the shift linkage to get in the right spot. When I hook it up the best I can and slide up the lower end the gear lever wont go all the way into reverse. Otherwords it wont click into gear. Ugh, the struggle continues.
