Nice. You fellows know way more about these than I do so my question is this, what should I expect to pay for a decent 85 or 100HP version of this motor in running or easily fixable condition with the necessary hardware (cables/ controls) ? Thank you in advance. Mark.

I wonder what the top end would be if I put that on my G-3 ? Is anybody running one now ? I'm looking for that 60mph magic.

Wish I had the means to get both of these for a twin rig...but then that leads to looking for another boat...and so on, and so on. I can see where I may have symptoms of "the affliction" to wanting more boats all of the time. I should be thankful for what I have and get my stuff restored and in the water before I get carried away.

Cal - are you an enabler :)

It's not an addiction, it's an affliction. Get one boat and it spreads like chickenpox. Soon your yard is covered in tarps and you can't find your car, then you can't get to the house so you sleep in a boat. You know, a hobby :)

I still have garage space for everything and can get into the house no problem. Ask me again when winter comes by.

Here's another little tease for ya, I actually ran mine and it has very good compression. I had to squirt gas in the carbs because the pump is bad. HERE it is.....I have the new pump kit and a new water pump kit for it to go with it. So lets see what or if that one sells.

Re:white merc....cheap 8 years 4 months ago #125759

Is there some kind of formula to calculate speed using the weight of the boat, the HP of the motor, and the prop that's on it ? I know you take care of your stuff so I'm nibbling.:) I really want that G-3 in the 60 plus zone but if I can get 45 or 50 mph out of a 50HP I'd give it serious thought. At the worst it could be a spare or I may need it for another boat. Can't have an extra motor. LOL.

Re:white merc....cheap 8 years 4 months ago #125760

You could always drive it with a 50 till you find more power! Maybe the 50 can be boosted with larger carbs too, and that would get you closer to the goal.

Re:white merc....cheap 8 years 4 months ago #125762

That's what I'm thinking. It would be better to have two powered and in the water than just one while I wait for a bigger powerplant. If I did that I'd be half a boat ahead though. I wouldn't want to make you rush the Marlin. LMAO. Seriously though, I think that motor would look really good on my Humber too. It's got a 40 Rude now but I'm always trying to step it up. Then I'd have a spare Evinrude and need another boat ! I think I'm gonna need an intervention. LOL

Re:white merc....cheap 8 years 3 months ago #126245

Sir, not to disappoint you, but you will not get even close to 60 mph with less than a 115-150 hp on your G-3!! I have had G-3s all my life. The 1960 I have now runs 55.2 mph (see pic) with my 1969 Merc 1000 (100 hp) and that is with perfect set up, etc. It will run some faster but starts "tail walking" above 56 mph and that is asking for disaster. I had a 1960 with a 75 hp back in the day set up for racing and it topped out at 48 mph!! I raced this boat for 17 years!!!

A G-3 becomes very dangerous and scary above 50 mph!!! A good match for your G-3 would be a Merc 650 or merc 850XS or a 70 hp Johnrude Stinger or 75 hp Yamaha. Be happy with their speeds and enjoy!!

Just trying to help!!
