He updated some pictures, and it looks like its a 1961 from the listing on oldmercs.com. It also looks like the carb linkage is broken, but that can be fixed.

Gurus - Oldmercs said that this model has an "unusual" transmission design that makes them difficult to service. Any insight??

It doesn't show up in the Merc dealers serial number guide (it starts at 1963 for other models) or the parts books...... I'd guess parts will be like the 110 for the most part. Serial number is pre 1963. The 1963 110 serial numbers start at 1474328 and obviously go up.

The Mercs like this one, with the swept-back driveshaft housing, have very few - if any parts that will cross to the 110, which is a 9.8 HP.
They can be extremely difficult to change out the water-pump, but if the seller has recently done that, it will probably come apart again after use in your salt free waterways.
They require special tools to replace the water pump impeller, and the water pump housing is up in the driveshaft housing - completely different engineering than other Mercs of the era.
They are interesting to operate, but I prefer avoiding these Mercs.
The Achilles Heel of classic Mercs IMHO.
