TOPIC: Looking for info 1961 Rambler

Looking for info 1961 Rambler 12 years 3 months ago #68765

I have a 1961 Rambler made in Fort Worth Texas. It has a 3 cylinder Scott Atwater engine. It's mounted vertically in a motor well with a lower unit underneath the boat. Any information would be appreciated. I can't find anything about this boat. Manufacturer?

Thanks

Some of the known boat builders in Ft. Worth, TX include: Clipper Mfg. Co. (Bay Mar boats); Fleetform; Glassco Boats, Inc.; Marine Plastics, Inc. (Glass Magic boats); Mustang Boat Co; Pleasure, Inc.; Skipper Mfg. Co; Terry Plastic Co; West American Industries, Inc.; and Whitehouse.

There may have been others.

Is "Rambler" the manufacturer's name or model name?

Thanks for the info. I don't know whether "Rambler" is the manufacturer or the model. The boat says "Rambler" on the fins and the registration says "Rambler". That's all I know. I've never seen a engine setup like this. Have you?

Here is an engine picture. How do you add multiple images to the same post?

Hello Everyone, Well I baught this boat tonight, Just too cool to pass up. The boat will take a total rebuild. my real question is.. What is this Scott Motor? The Serial on top of it is : 332 - 3197.
I couldnt find a number on the lower unit, but it doesnt look at all home made, any one have a clue as to who made that? Well here are a couple more pictures of the boat. As there are a bunch up top I will put some from the other sides.

I Know nothing about Scott Motors... So any info would be great.

Thanks

It is probably a 1958 60 HP. The large generator was used on only the 1958 and 1959 model 60 hp. There are some lower unit parts that look like scott atwater parts ( cap, prop nut) The lower unit casting is not familiar.

Well In cleaning out the leaves and taking out the totally gone floor we found the hull ID tag, it says. RAMBLER Serial R 6076 Fort worth TX. So doesn’t tell me much more than Rambler is the Manufacturer Not the Model. Sorry for the bad pic.. used my Cell..

Looking at the ad, it stated the these boats have a Merc Outboard model also. You may be able to find abit more info by going down that road. Alot of times these manufactures would not put all or too much info out on different boats.I do remember seeing some info on rambler boats years ago. It was in a mag. It may have been Popular mech., or one of those mags. They were good at doing stories on these offbeat boats back in the 50s and 60s. Good luck with it and keep us posted on your progress. Skip.

Well Dove into the powerhead last night... Its pretty stuck... Looks like it may have been a 40 Horse Scott inboard that some one converted a 60 to fit.. So I may be looking for a new powerhead, 40 HP up to 75? I dont know much about these Scotts do the 40's and 60's/75's share a common drive shaft spline? and prop shaft size? Well if you have one in the Albany NY area I can use for part. Thanks for any help.

I went ahead and created an entry in the FiberGlassics Library for Rambler Boats. That may help draw in some more information on your boat.

stashm2,

I've uncovered over 150 TX boatbuilders that built boats between 1950-70 & about 40 of them have NO surviving factory info.
MY 16' HURRICANE out of Houston for one, that i've found almost ZILCH about. - ALL that i've been able to find is the address where they were about 1960.

BEST WISHES on your search for dats.

It is sad how information gets lost. Companies still in business are only interested in turning a profit TODAY. Companies on the brink of failure usually embrace their glory days, but when they fail, most of the records/drawings/production and numbers hit the trash. Others had an event that wiped out the information, like the Larson fire. I'll bet a some of the 40 Texas builders with no info were wiped out by hurricanes.

That Rambler sure is interesting. A fun and cheap way to make an inboard.

I found some information today on the Scott-McCulloch inboard conversion. They were offered by Dallas Marine Corp. of Dallas, Texas beginning in 1960, at least in the boats they made. They likely made the unit available to other boat builders such as Rambler.

shawbrook,

WELCOME ABOARD.

I'm one of "the friendly neighborhood fanatics" on TEXAS-BUILT boats BUT I have NO such information on RAMBLER in my list of over 150 Texas boat-builders.
(Should you find additional information on the builder of your NICE boat, please send me a PM with the info.)

yours, satx

No info, but want to say cool boat and layout. Looks like a pre-cursor to the volvopenta "pods" - of course facing opposite direction and if you hit something with that you'll likely have a leak!

good luck

Wow the Fins on the boat shown in this picture look just like my Rambler. I wonder if they made the hulls also and sold as Rambler?
