TOPIC: Mounting seats on fiberglass?

Mounting seats on fiberglass? 12 years 6 months ago #62806

As I said in another thread, I recently purchased a 70s Ouachita fiberglass boat. It came with what appear to be the original seats but way of mounting them.
So here is my question...how do I mount the seats? I dont really even have the slightest idea so ANY help would be awesome. Thanks!

I don't know what a Ouachita fiberglass boat is, but a few pics would help.
I mounted 2 sets of back to back seats to the floor with short lag bolts and sealer. (4 per seat)

OK I saw your other post. I cannot see how you would mount those seats either.
If they match the color scheme of the boat they may be original. Was the floor already repalced?

I probably should have linked to the other post. Sorry.

But anyway, It appears to me that the seats do match relatively (they are not exactly the same color but seem to mimick the light blue/white theme)

The floor has not been replaced, but upon further investigation there are 4 holes (picutred) that I suppose could be for seat mounting. Though I am still a little confused as to how that would be safe and sturdy enough.

Thirdly, do I need a pedestal for these? Would that work or what would you suggest. I dont need anything super complicated just some way to mount them that doesnt consist of like, sitting on a bucket!

Thanks!

Can't really see enough so not sure. Some generalities. There could be a box made and glassed to the deck on the inside. This would give some storage and then mount the seats to the top of each box. A pedestal could work and I have had some success with a Pop Rivit like tool that sets quarter twenty threaded inserts in the deck.

If it were my boat I would continue to research to see what was standard if possible and try to recreate that look.

Cool, thanks for the ideas.
I like the one about the box/storage as I need some on the boat. From what I can tell from the little info I can find, it did have a box with a seat on top.

I really like that one the best and think it might work out.
Thanks for the suggestions!

a pic of the underside of the seats may help determine how they were mounted. if they were on pedestals, the base would've likely been attached to the deck with 6-8 screws, not four. so perhaps yours did come with the storage box. still, a look at the underside of the seats may help determine for sure.

Here is a lovely picture!
Im guessing that because of the fact that its got four (what appear to be) wood screws in the base that it was mounted to a box.
What do you think?

I'm not sure... I would guess box over pedestal due to the large block on there, but I don't know what the screws would be for. I'm not certain that all of the mounting components are factory, even if the seats are. If you need storage on the boat anyway, i'd go with the box idea anyway, IMO.
