TOPIC: Bunk Roller Question- 1963 Holsclaw Trailer

Two questions about the rollers.

In the first picture- It looks like some kind of barrel nut... I don't know if that is the right term. Any idea on how to remove it?

In the next two pictures, there are rollers on a flared shaft. Is the only way to change the roller by cutting the shaft? It seems like a dumb question because it looks like it does, but before I cut 20 shafts, I want to make sure.

You can drive the roller pin out and reuse it. As for the others it appears to me that it is a one time use deal. I don't like that idea.

Dave. Robert is right, you can drive the cold roll pin out using a punch or a nail/bolt to drive it through. I've encountered those %&*(*&^% type rollers before that were in worse shape than yours. Took a 4" grinder to one end and removed them all. Replaced with 2x4 carpet covered bunks.

Thanks for the feedback. I was able to finally loosen a pin. I've ordered a pin set now to finish the job.

Based upon a recommendation from someone in my local club. I'm going to see about sanding the rollers on the bunks. They are actually in pretty good shape. And they are original to the trailer.

They are easy to sand also, forgot to mention that. Mine were beyond that stage. about a 120 grit works good.

If you know someone with a lathe it makes short work of the job.

So I have figured out how to replace the keel rollers and get something to look kind of correct. My question is I am getting some Stoltz rp-212 rollers. It says they can be cut to size.

What kind of saw do you use to cut them?

I have a miter saw. Would that work? I don't have a bandsaw. If a miter saw would work, any recommendations on the type of blade? I don't want to lose any fingers in this process.

Hi David,

We have cut a dozen or more rollers with a small cut-off grinder using a 4.5" disk. If you are doing it by hand, I would use a very fine blade so as to not tear the rubber. Use a piece of masking tape wrapped around the roller for your cutting mark.
