Tongue and Groove mystery runabout - Help! 7 years 7 months ago #131495

What is this? Thompson/wolverine? Soooo lost
So here are the details:

I bought this boat off a man who said he thought it was a 1952. Believed to have been purchased from rowletts bicylce and canoe in Richmond VA. He had it in a barn since the late 60's ish, had no paperwork. All he had was a picture of him and his wife around that time. It is approximately 11' 6" ft long and it has no markings/plaques except for numbers carved into the railing upside down on the transom.
They look to read '10o9F' and '6 2'. I have attached pictures.

It looks a lot like one of the wolverine pictures I have seen but the tongue and groove is coming back to be the factor throwing me off.

The strip of wood that runs down the side of the boat about half way is unlike most others I see because that strip runs up to the bow completely.

It has grooved strip sides (as you can see in one of the close up pics of the stern). The tops are a marine plywood with a mahogany laminate. The ribs, seats and other parts are all made of what looks to be oak/ash. The bottom is marine plywood. Disclaimer: Not a professional wood identifier!!

The steering wheel says vollrath in sheboykin Wisconsin and is hooked up on a pulley system, it never had any remote throttle control.

That is a fun restore/rebuild. Congrats on the find. Keyword on your post is Thompson so I'm guessing Andreas will come in very shortly. He's the guru on all things wooden and especially history.
Welcome aboard. You came to the right place

Matt,
Welcome aboard, glad your here. It's definitely NOT a Wolverine as all the wolverine's were formed plywood not planked. Might be a Thompson but as Cal said Andreas is the expert on Thompson's so I'll leave that to him.

I emailed him prior to posting here.

The tongue and groove has him stumped. Apparently everyone else I have talked to also. Know anyone else?

Really nice boat. Not sure how close you would be to Tomahawk, Wisconsin...but in August they have their National Antique Outboard show. If you had it there on display with that' question, maybe enough old salts could identify if. I think you have a great boat!

It is not a Thompson. I have actually never seen nor heard of a boat planked with tongue-and-groove wood. I wonder if she is homemade????

Andreas, I thought the same. Tongue and groove would pretty much assure water tight once is swelled but also might be prone to cracking. Ether way she is nice.
