TOPIC: 1967 Lyman Runabout

Just received a nice little inboard Lyman that needs a makeover badly. We'll start taking her apart next week. The transom will need to be replaced but the rest of her looks to be sound.

Those old Lymans have timeless styling.. Can't wait to see her restored back to her original glory..

Ya, right. Jan will more than likely NOT restore it to original glory. He works his own special magic on those beauties.
What motor is in it now Jan?

The engine is the original Chrysler slant 6, complete with mouse nest. The owner wants me to leave it alone...says he can do whatever is necessary. Too bad. I hate ugly engines.



My job is to make the boat seaworthy and pretty again. We'll do everything as close to original as is practical, given budget limitations. I might do something different with the upholstery. The white with red piping looks tacky to me. Maybe maroon with a maroon waterline stripe? We'll see.

Meanwhile, I've started on the front windows. Taking them apart is a bitch! That 50-year-old white "rubber" molding is now petrified! Getting it out is a major job. We broke both panes of glass in the process. I had considered replacing the plate glass with safety glass anyway so now it's a no-brainer.

That ol' six banger will look just fine with a fresh coat of Chrysler blue, some reproduction decals, and fresh hoses.. I guarantee that old slant 6 will draw a bigger crowd at the dock than the "generic" smallblock Chevy everyone seems to want to drop in every old boat & car they get their hands on.. I bet that old six will sound some kind of sweet breathing thru those dual exhaust outlets..

As usual Jan it will look awesome when your done with it. Cal's right about the Slant Six as you don't see many of them and they were pretty bullet proof.

Bob, I had one of those slant sixes in a '65 Valiant convertible. Another car I should not have sold.
Might be bullet proof but if they run without oil they can blow a hole in the side of the cast iron block the size of a pumpkin. Don't ask how I know.

Cal, it probably said in the manual that you can't run without oil until after 300,000 miles for trips less than 30 minutes lol. Owner needs an old valiant with a slant six for local tows and shows. Looks like more room to work on it and also for the nice... dang things.
