Hello
I am about to embark on tearing down my 54 Trojan Sea Queen, It needs all new Plywood sheeting and many Oak frames redone. the question is what would be the best plan of attack once I get the ply off to make paterns should I take all ribs out and copie the bad or go fram by frame to maintain squareness?
any thoughts will be appriciated!
Thank you
Jesse Chartier

I did a 1956 Sea Queen about 4 years ago. All new plywood on sides and bottom and decks completely redone. Take the plywood off carefully. Save it for patterns. Frames should be repaired one at a time.

It was a contract boat, not mine.

Here is another 56 Sea Queen. I worked on the motor that is on the boat but the owner refinished it. He used George Kirby paints which I thought were perfect for the little old gal....

Well Now that its cold out I have decided to focus on my Trojan... I will post some pictures of the progress so far. In truth it is in very rough shape and probably I should run the other way and use it to heat the house but, I am going to continue to take it apart and try to put the old thing back together. its definately not for the Faint of Heart!.

Well That is all I can bear to post on Dial up. This one is going to take staying strong!

Jesse,
Good work so far. your right that looks like it's not for the faint at heart but I'm sure you'll bring her back to all her wonderous glory. Can't wait to see her done.

That looks to be a monstrous task indeed.
By the looks of your shop, you are a woodworker. Those skills will take you through to the end. Keep going the end will be the big payoff.

WoW! I unscrewed all the plywood. I think that's actually easier. But both methods work. You aren't going to have any patterns though. But this is where builders paper can be used to pattern your curves. It works well too.

It's not going as planned I had ment to unscrew all the pannels but its covered in Glass and peeling that off is prooving difficult on the sides. the bottom was just so rotted that when I pulled off the glass the plywood fell apart. Definetely looked better on the outside than it is. so I think I am going to end up doing the builders paper for the bottom at least, the old brochure I have for it emphasizes a single pice bottom but I think that will end up being two for the rebuild. we will see, Its not that bad though I had planned to replace most of the lower hull any how so I just have to remember that as I go forward. Thanks to All and Happy Holidays!

Well Worked a few hours unscrewing and removing the plywood on one side of my Sea Queen I had hoped to save the side pannel but with the remaining glue and rott they came off in pices. I did get alot of pictures showing how they were Joined and should be able to mimic the Joints in the future. Well here are some more pics. The boat is covered in Glass but I dont think it originaly was.. However I dont see evidence of paint under the glass so... Does any one know if these old trojans were glassed at the factory or just painted?
Thanks
Jesse

I am not sure what boat your refering to. If its my "Avitar" thats a 1960 Wagemaker Empire Clipper. Otherwise all the wood boat pics are the Trojan.

Jesse,
I think he's referring to G3Jims pics.

Joe those pics aren't Jesse's they belong to G3Jim.

Trojans were not glassed. Just plywood. Unfortunately all I have are photos of the finished job. All the work photos are on my old IBM Aptiva that died. I'll see if I can get them from the FG archives.
