TOPIC: What is this woody?

What is this woody? 12 years 3 weeks ago #71988

OK sports fans, what is she? I have determined she is NOT a Thompson Bros. Boat Mfg. Co. or any of her spin-offs. She just does not fit the dimensions or construction of a Thompson; Cruisers, Inc.; T & T Boats, Inc.; Grady-White Boat...

The plywood planking is screw fastened to the steam bent white oak ribs. The planking is clinch nailed to the adjacent planking piece. She is not bolted like a Thompson et.al. The outside layer of the transom is plywood, not solid boards. The inner layer is solid boards.

There is NO hull ID or serial number or any other markings on the boat. The interior is long gone. The deck is gone.

Dimensions are: 15'-6" centerline length; 16'-1" gunwale length; 69" beam; 61" transom width; 56" deck length form tip of bow to dahsboard. She has a OBC rating tag with 33 HP and 610 pounds capacity. I wonder if this OBC tag is original. It definately has been moved at least one time.

Looks like the transom has been altered near the edges at the top. Like they cut it down and inch or 2 for a trolling motor or some such thing. Does it look like that up close, or just on the internet?

Yes, the transom has had chunks cut out of her.

I also believe the metal braces that go from transom to stingers are non-original.

thompsonboat,

It LOOKS like a PennYan. - IF it is, there will be a layer of fabric between the inside & outside layers of planking/transom.

The hull planking is plywood lapstrake, only one layer. It is not like the strip built Penn Yan boats with the two layers of bead and cove strip planking and fabric between the layers.

This is eating at me, because I've seen one before, but can't remember where ? It's been many years, But My guess is a Canadian manufacturer up in the Muskoka's, Seabird, Duke ???? Are the fasteners square head ?

I must have seen it at the Buffalo Boat Show ? I grew up in Buffalo. After reading the description on that web-link. It makes sense, because Cheektowaga is a burb of Buffalo.
I still swear I saw one in the Muskokas too ?

This history of Cayuga Boats has been languishing in the Library. I will see about adding a page for Cayuga soon:
