jsmedl,

WELCOME ABOARD.

I've used epoxy "peanut butter" successfully to BUILD boats & to cover them with fiberglass/Dacron cloth but NOT to coat old boats.

Unless you get a 100% seal you are going to have nothing but problems. A crack in the coating or a deep scratch will let moisture in and we all know that it will not come out as easy as it gets in. Soon you will have to be pulling the coating off and replacing the wood under it. Just like glassing over wood. With paint you will see it turning loose and know something is wrong. Easier to remove and repair.

Another quick fix that in the long run will cost more.

I'm trying not to be too harsh but you've hit a nerve.

Wooden boats of some kind have been around for about 20,000 years. None of them had epoxy. Think "Old School." As my father used to say to me (constantly), "When you get your mind right, your ass will follow."

As I wrote and sent the Moderator. This is an ad and they should be paying. (First and most likely only post)

However I do a lot of work for a big supermarket here in TX and work hand and hand with a Co that lays the flooring. The owner is an Aggie engineer (as I am but difference fields) We talked about coating and he will not even cover the deck of my boats with any.

However they are putting the floor covering down in my new shop behind the house and it has a plywood floor...a scratch back deal

Well Tex, it might be an ad but I don't think his product is going anywhere here...at least not on wooden boats. I want to have a serious talk with anybody here who epoxies a wooden boat.

Nautilus,

Those of us who belong (or even have belonged) to THE HISTORIC ALEXANDRIA SEAPORT'S MUSEUM (and the wooden boat-building school at the museum) in Alexandria, VA have tried "coating boats" with PENETRATING Epoxy combined with "vacumn bagging" & know that they have "held up" for almost 20 years, as a sealant.
(Nonetheless, I do NOT suggest that technique to others, as we simply don't know enough to assure that the hull will remain watertight permanently.)

Otoh, 17-26 foot SIMMONS SEA SKIFF replicas (and other watercraft) have been BUILT from lumber, plywood, "peanut butter" & fiberglass cloth laid in epoxy, almost ever since the invention of epoxy resin. = Those "hold up" just FINE, thanks.
(Plans with directions for building replicas are available from THE CAPE FEAR MUSEUM STORE in Wilmington, NC.)

I'd guess that "the bottom line" is:
Epoxy for NEW wooden boat construction is: FINE.
For other wooden boat uses: QUESTIONABLE.
