This is what Rosie refers to as "A Truck Load of Junk"

Hidden in that "pile of junk" is my 327 and the 800 series stringer that I'm going to rebuild for the Deluxe. I got the drive super cheap and the old engine that it was hooked to was free. The old Ford engine is JUNK but I wanted as many parts from it as possible and sold the rest for scrap.

So... the 800 Stringer rebuild will be next up!

Watch it go from this...

to this!

First thing was to build a cheap dolly for the drive to sit on.

Then I started cleaning the bellhousing...

Cleaned and primed. Ready to be painted later.

Ummm, I see a potential problem... I know in Mercruiser gearing, a v6 lower unit on a v8 engine = no planing......

Great point. Luckily the gearing difference in a stringer occurs in the upper gear housing.

The only difference between a V-6 and V-8 lower unit was the decal on the side. Same part number for either.

Let me ask a potentially, brilliant or stupid, question. I'm not familiar with the old omc drives, but the one I have been up close to is so different different to the Merc alpha's I know. I see where the engine in this case a chevy bolted up to the drive like a car or inboard transmission would. Unlike the way a merc sets off the engine on its mounts and there is a short "drive shaft" to the drive housing thats bolted to the transom.

So after that windy setup the question is:
Will that drive that came with a (I assume) 302 Ford, fit up to the Chevy? Including the flywheel, drive plate or whatever they use. Plus all the marine cooling bits like chevy manifolds, parts to hook the manifolds to the drives exhaust, or a thru transom exhaust.

My buddy still has the stringer off his checkmate. There was no engine. most of the drive is there. I am sure he will get off any bits you might need cheap. (or a 12 pack :) ) This one is the fancy version with the trim jacks that raise/lower the front of the engine for trim.

Brilliant question!

The answer is no.

To use my 327 I needed to locate a flywheel and adapter that is splined to the input shaft of the 800. New exhaust manifolds of course. The risers on the Ford were standard Barr replacements so those I can use! The exhaust is going through the hull. I picked up a few other items like a thermostat housing, dipstick and tube, front mount, etc. I took my time and searched Craigslist until found a guy with a junk 305 I could get most of stuff for $150!

The bell house had the marks for a Chevy bolt pattern. I just drilled it out on the drill press and it bolted right up.

Does your buddy have any of the trim stuff left?

When next I am out at his place which might be this weekend I will take pics and scope what is there. I think there might be manifolds, but I am not sure what shape they are in.

Damned nice looking unit. I'm thinking that maybe I should sub-out some of my work to you. Wanna do a couple more stringer units?

Stringer work continues. Regrettably I didn't take any pictures of me rebuilding the upper gear housing. This is the heart and soul of a Stringer and where most problems occur.

This little gear housing contains the steering, shifter cable, exhaust, cooling water, water pump, 3 shafts, and numerous bearing and seals.

If you neglect or misuse a Stringer the damage usually begins here.

I'm still keeping an eye on ya. Looks good. That is some serious steep pitch on that prop. What is the ratio of that drive?

The gear ratio is 21:16, that's the gear set for either a Chevy 350 or Ford 351

Next up... months and months of body work.
I started out by stripping the hull...

At this point, I had no idea I would be able to flip the deluxe over to work on the bottom. So I thought I could work on the bottom from underneath...DUH!

Re:1964 Johnson Deluxe Resto-Mod 10 years 8 months ago #92118

Since I started tagging along your rebuild of this Deluxe, I've noticed 2 w/in minutes of my house & each other, locally. Had only ever seen pix of 2 others before yours and now there's 2 around locally. hmmmm seemed odd enough to mention it.

1 seems about the same as yours, in need of some attention, but the other's condition is only a 1/2 step from really sad....

Looking forward to the AFV/YouTube video of the flip of this wide body craft...........

Update: Jan Hadley recommended using gel coat as a body filler to get rid of the elephant hide texture and the 10,000 cracks and imperfections.

Let me tell you, that stuff is amazing! You can cover a large area, it sets up quick, and sands away easily leaving a smooth surface.
