It was great being there and seeing what a great job you have done. You really accomplished a lot since I was there last year. Looking forward to a ride on the lake when I come back next year. Enjoyed our visit immensely.
Thanks for having me.

Andrew, Terrific progress, glad to see you're not letting up. Your mounting for the fuel tank is similar to what I did on the '57 Herters I rebuilt except it had a "V" hull. I glassed supports to make a level area in the bow and built the exact angle iron frame upper and lower. Worked great. Only problem that surfaced was I had such a sharp angle in the filler hose that it took forever to fill the tank without spilling on the deck. Here's the boat after I sold it. I mounted the tank in the bow to help distribute the weight because the Herters was already low in the stern without 12 gallons of fuel. You can see how she sits (not the buyer that's standing :))

Hey 63 Saber, I didn't have an inch to spare under the bow. So I had to locate the filler directly over the opening on the tank. It's a straight shot! Haha pictures to come of the connections...

Time to sort out the instrument panel...

This is the original configuration, 4 gauges, 2 idiot lights, and a bunch of switch location.

Stripped clean, now I want to figure a way to install 6 modern gauges, keep all the switch locations, and not look like a hack job!

Back side of the panel.

Proposed location for the new gauges.

What if you recreated the dash cluster out of wood or aluminum, or anything else for that matter? Just saying because there can't be that many originals out there.

A piece of engine turned aluminum cut to fit area on gauge panel. Cover the entire elipse shape

Great ideas! This what I came up with... A very tough piece of aluminum. It is in white primer at this point.

An I carefully opened the housing to make room for the gauges.

So far so good...

Thanks for the compliments guys... This panel is important to the entire project. It's where all eyes will go first, whether good or bad.

Test fitting the gauges... looks pretty good

I took a page from Jan Hadley's play book, the engine turn decal!

I wanted a contrast color for the switch locations though. The original panel did something similar.

The engine turn decal has to be lined up properly, the pattern has to be centered and straight... You would "see" it even if you didn't realize it.

Painted the housing...

Looks pretty decent I think...

What's covering the switch areas that don't have the turning decal?

I painted that area with gold/bronze paint, then clear coated. I overlapped the decal about 1/8th of an inch with the clear to lock it down. No peeling!!

I really appreciate the kind words... It's not that big a thing. I spent 2 months reading all the posts here and taking notes from all you guys. I used some grid paper and an old street sign for my aluminum. Be surprised what you can do with grid paper. Once I had the problems worked out it was a matter of center punching the all the hole locations. Finished dash pics coming soon!
Thanks for all the help!

Thanks so much for the compliments.
I have a series of pictures covering the trailer rebuild that will be posted soon.

I haven't thought about any shows, I still have a ton of work to get done before summer. We plan on using her this summer for fun and then decide next years improvements.

I'm glad you were able to get your sail boat restored. Did you use gel-coat for repair and then paint?
