Well two more sets of upper frames done. They are installed I just didn't get a pic yet. Would have been done sooner but daughters wedding shower back in Michigan had to be attended. ;)

Unfortunately I have to get another chine blank. This on isn't usable. Apparently it was much drier than usual here this winter even though it was inside the shed with all the doors closed the whole time. :( Good thing I got it from the Amish and it only cost $20 .

Time to go back and get another one and coat the ends and use some thinned out Linseed oil to coat the rest of it and hope for the best. I only did the ends on the first one.

Well the upper frames are finally done Woo Hoo!

Now on to routing the keel bed. Here's the router jig I used.
Routed flat up to frame 4 1/2 not to figure out how to do the frames from 4 to the stem. Lol

Bob, can you say "New Boat"? That's what you're going to have when finished. Something that will last more than another 50 years and can be passed down. Great job so far. It's going to be tempting to take some shortcuts as you get further along, I called those anxious moments and it was hard to stay on track. I did fall at times though
KUDOS.

Maaahvelous, simply Maaahvelous. Are you using the keel as a pattern or is it in good condition to install?
Can't help but think how much a new boat like that would have cost if Century had used all that effort and precision. :)

Ok, so it's time for frame routing. here's the jig with the router.

I got half way through the frames when this little bugger let lose and went down into the spinning blade!

And did this damage!

Luckily I wasn't hit by any flying carbide. Project is on hold again until I an get another bit. :(

Yeah hurt like hell and couldn't get it out so went by the doc's today to get it dug out. Should have taken a pic it was a beaut! LOL

New router bit is in the mail, hopefully I'll get it by the weekend.

OK, now that I'm finally back from the wedding and the cruise we did afterwards I can get back to the projects. I had to finish the Admirals vanity stool (in the NBR section). I'm sorry I missed the Conneaut (spelling) lake meet last week but it was too soon after just getting home. I know I missed a lot of great classic glass and a whole bunch of Century's from the Century Thuroughbred round up but I did get a lot of stuff done.

I finished all the bottom frame routing to match the old keel.

Now if it would just stop raining enough to get the new keel blank plained so I can cut it to match the old one. I also need to cut the new stem and foot.

I got more done on the Resorter this weekend, between rain showers.
Here's the keel blank being cut.

Here are the stem and foot blanks.

Now I just have to sand the keel sides smooth, cut out the stem and foot, sand them and fit them then fit to the keel, CPES it all then 5200 the stem, foot and keel together and install.

Excellent! Good to see some weekend progress. Waiting to see you drill the hole for the shaft.
What really hurts is when the bottom is completely finished and you have to punch holes right back in it for water cooling intake, drain plug, and rudder. Need lots of 5200 :)

Hi Bob,
That is looking Great.
Can you take lots of pictures, and what type of jigs you have to make, to cut the plank rabbets on the stem and foot ?
I am having a hard time visualizing the contour change from the bottom plank rabbet to the bow plank rabbet. I know it's a constant plank thickness depth, but is the cutwater angle variable or fixed ?
Or is it just as simple as setting the depth of a router for the planks at a fixed cutwater angle, and using the stem curvature as a guide ?
Can I assume the plank rabbet is cut to depth on the flat stem and foot blank, before the cutwater taper angle is cut ?
You are doing an amazing job ! keep the pics coming !!!

Thanks guys, it's coming along slowly.

Cal, yeah not looking forward to that. Still have to figure out how I'm going to drill that. I don't have a shaft with a bit hole on the end for a forstner bit. I guess I can make one on the lathe if I can find the right size piece of steel shaft. I also have to figure out where to place the strut and rudder because the final transom frame came out about a 1/2 or so shorter bow than the original. I don't remember how much clearance there was between the rudder and the prop. Yikes!

Chuck, I'm trying to take as many pics as I can.....when I remember. ;) Believe it or not there's a video out, which I have to find again, about cutting the plank rabbets with a 4" 36 grit sanding wheel on a grinder. The lines were drawn for how far in toward the bow and how deep and away he went. Was done in about 10 minutes total for both sides. I think it was posted on the Century Club page on facebook.

So I got the keel blank cut out and ready to attach to the stem and foot.

I got the stem and forefoot blanks cut out also.

Also got the stem and forefoot cut out with the joint finished. I don't think I can get it too much closer than this.

The old Rigid oscillating spindle sander with the belt attachment made quick work of it.

Now to attach them and start getting it shaped.

well ran out of the regular 5200 and my local Lowes doesn't carry the 10oz tubes of regular anymore, just the quickset 5200. So I got a tube of that, but have been told that it's not as strong as the regular and don't use it on the stem! Thoughts?

I was told this after I had already assembled it. I've gotten the keel carriage bolt holes drilled and fitted.

Unfortunately the chine blank is not drying like I had hoped. I coted all sides with a 50/50 mix of tung oil and paint thinner and it's still cracking. It's actually 10/4 x 8" x 19' so I don't know how deep the cracks are and if they'll continue before I can get to it.

Well we'll have to see what happens with the chine blank.

Any thoughts on the fast cure 5200 tensile strength?

Bob, really looks good! Just out of curiosity I Binged the 5200 fast cure, couldn't find anything on actual tensile strength but all reviews gave it 5 stars. Me thinks the fast cure along with the brass bolts is probably stronger than original so you should be good for about 50 years, check back with me then.
Just used up my last tube of regular 5200 two weeks ago, black of all colors, and it only took five days to get it off the back of my elbows. Stuff seems to get on and stick to everything

Cal, thanks I agree and yeah that stuff ends up all over the place!!!!!

So I got the stem/forefoot carved to shape tonight. I have to wait until my 5/8" plug cutter gets here to finish it, so I can plug the carriage bolt holes.

Just have to finish carving the plank rabbets with the 4" grinder and sanding wheel, then CPES it and the keel and put them together. I found a place that carries the CPES for reasonable price, vintagetrailersupply.com.

Wow Bob, you have quite a project there!
I just scrolled through all pages of you thread and looked at the pics.
This is a total rebuild.
Back in 1981 I started building a sail boat from scratch, a hard chined plywood hull over fir frames, covered with glass. Finished it about 1991. Sailed the shit out of that little boat.

Beautiful work. Are you going to re use the old planking? When do you think you will be finished?

Nice work!

Mike

Thanks Mike, yeah she turned into a pattern boat unfortunately. Nope won't be using the old planking. The bottom planks didn't come off well do to the epoxy and quite a few of the side planks were getting rough so may as well just do all new. I have a few ideas for the old planking though, but I'm not telling until I get started on that. ;)

AS far as when will it be done, well if you ask the Admiral is should have been done a while ago!!! LOL I don't have a set date per se but I'm shooting for as soon as possible. I really hope to have it done by next summer but we'll see. It depends on how much life gets in the way between now and then. ;) It's hard to get things done on just weekends and a few nights during the week.

Well I finally got the 80hp working again so I was able to get back to the Resorter. I had to remake frame 1 1/2 since I did like the way it was fitting. I was able to get the stem/forefoot attached to the keel with the 5200. I was also able to bed down the keel and stem/forefoot into position in the 5200.

I'll rout the garboard plank beds into the keel once it dries, then on to the chines and battens.
