Greg it didn't come through, even as spam, not sure why.

Worked on the boat all weekend but not much to show for it. I didn't take any pics will take some tomorrow. I got two full rows of planks on the port side and did manage to get all the bungs/plus off all the screws but I still have to grind out the epoxy in all the slots. The person who did the bottom last epoxied them in!!!!!!!!! I've used up two Dremel diamond bits trying to grind out the slots. Got the whole port side doe but need to finish the starboard side before I can remove all the screws. Planks are coming out but it's ugly. They're splitting by the battens since that's where they were epoxied but there's still enough on the top part to make patterns from them. Very slow going. Also looks like the bottom ties are all split where the screws went in. :( I think I paid too much for what now appears to be a pattern boat! ARGH.

Here are the pics of the heads I promised. Carboned up as I figured but the cylinders look pretty good so..........

Hi Bob,
I'm sure you know this, but don't pitch the original silicon bronze screws, if you replace them with new. Those are good melting stock to make new deck harware castings if you are missing a piece or two ?

Ok finally got all the screw slots ground out so I can pull the screws. It's been slow going, that epoxy is a pain in the butt!!!!!! Did get two rows of planks off over the weekend. Unfortunately the majority of the bottom ties are cracked where the screws were put in. Obviously who ever did the bottom last didn't pre-drill like your supposed to, to prevent this.

Ok I give up on trying to fix that pic.

Yep they're cracked.

Well I finally got all the bottom planks off so he bottom is naked and it isn't pretty, she's going to need a plastic (well wood) surgeon. ;) Looks like the aft two frames are original and the others were replaced at some point, not recently though.

OK, Bob. I've stayed out of this fray for awhile now 'cuz it brings back some memories of years gone by. The "63 Sabre" title comes from my Century. I can match your pictures identically. Took over 1200 of them when I did my rebuild. Over the course of three years on and off. I can give you inside info if needed, also with the engine rebuild. I dropped my Century Club membership this spring 'cuz I sold the boat to a lady in Ill. but I still follow the facebook posts and on occasion answer some of the postings on their site. If you need pictures for some comparisons I can probably provide them.
Looks like you have a great start and progressing. I found that a few weeks away from the project once in awhile does some good. I used African mahogany for my replacements. Honduran seems to be harder and more brittle, splits easily. Once you use the 5200 it's permanent but you will have some days to move around if needed before it sets up.

Cal,
Thanks appreciate that. Wondered why I hadn't seen you post on the club page in quite a while. Sorry to lose you there but very glad your still here. I'm hoping it doesn't take 3 years or the Admiral will have a fit! LOL I'll be taking boating time on the Clipper for sure! I'll be using African since that's what was on the Resorters for that year, plus it's cheaper! By the way when the bottom was replaced many years ago they used all Mahogany vice White Oak for the frames and Chines. I can say this much, that 5200 isn't nearly as permanent as the Epoxy that they used!!!!!!!!!!!

Al, thanks and not a problem on the ride. ;)

Re:'53 18' Century Resorter finally 10 years 8 months ago #92699

Bob,
Having attended many boat workshops in Buffalo. I don’t remember seeing any boat with the bottom off that didn’t have split frames from fasteners.
So don’t feel bad, if you think you got a bum deal ? That was the first thing I thought when you said you had split bottom planks…. He’ll probably have to replace the frames too ?
In fact, I priced out a bottom replace in the mid 80’s, and was told right up front. That most likely the frames will need replaced also.
Think of it this way… the bottom will be much stronger when you’re done, and your twisted hull will be fixed too ?

It sure will be a stunner when you're done !!!!
Keep the pics coming....

Fret not, still working on her. I started on the stringers today.

Ok again I['m done trying to rotate it.
The original had blocks when the V-8 was added but I'm thinking I should make the new one all one piece since it will fit in the boards I bought.

Ok really screwy tonight, not sure why the pic won't post but it gives a link. Never had that happen before.

Sorry honey do and life took over. Had to put down 40 bags of mulch, replant an azalea, plant two new azalea's and a Lilac bush, put down bender board border. Still have to power wash the house and deck, sand and paint the shed trim, prep the Clipper for boating season. Hmm let's see did I forget anything? Oh yeah, technically need to re-stain the deck and paint the wrought iron fence. No biggie, just a weekend job right?!?!!?

I'm loving that engine! Did you ever figure out exactly what you have there? Looks like an older 350 from the late 60's.

Thanks Andrew, yes it a '71-'73 350 with '76 76cc smogger heads. Just dropped off the whole shabang at the machine shop for cleaning, tweaking and prep for paint. He's going to look at it all and give me shout in a few days with recommendations. Looks like I'll need a new cam as one of the lobes is worn at an angle, slightly. He said it actually didn't look that bad so we'll have to wait and see.

bob, if you have a lobe worn you should replace the cam, as they are only surface hardened, I seen them worn round once they wear thru. also replace al the lifters. you may have known this. good luck. greg

Very cool Andrew thanks. Well it's been a while and life has been in the way but I have gotten back to the stringers and they are now in and ready to go. I had to take a bunch of measurements so I could figure out how much White Oak to get. Used a woodworking optimizer software and I think I know how much. Now I just need to go get it and get started on the frames.

Dry and installed

Now to buy some lumber.

Great progress. Don't think I would have the patience for that anymore. How is the bottom transom bow. Those seem to be the first to rot out or delaminate.

If it makes you feel any better I have a friend in Green Bay that bought a basket case Coronado, turned out to be a pattern boat in the worst way. So far he just finished up the framing and looking forward to cut and put on the first plank. It's been four years now...I think you will beat him

Ok it's been a while sorry. Lots of life stuff going on so I did get back to her though.

Hi Ho, Hi ho, a framing we will go!
Got the white oak for the frames.

Got the first plank above the Chines off.

Frames 1 1/2, 2 and 2 1/2 are out but going to put frame 2 back in and only do every other one first then go back and do the others. A great suggestion from the Century club guys.

Unfortunately I have to get back on the Clipper as we took our friends out Sunday and she died 5 minutes after changing over tanks. Switched to another one but now joy. Had to be towed from Port Kinsale Virginia back to St. George's Island launch ramp. Thanks God for Boat US towing!!!!!!!!!

Ok so slight change of plans. Put the frames back in and opted to remove all the side planking in order to brace up the whole boat and make sure everything is level and straight. That the frames should be level and straight. This boat was very lose and I found a lot of backyard fixes under the planks. More rot that I didn't expect also. Looks like I'll be replacing upper frames also, boooooo!

Now to tweak her and begin reframing the bottom.

Well the hull is tweaked and the blocks have been screwed down to the floor with two long drywall screws, predrilled so it wouldn't crack.

NOW it's time to start reframing.

Bob, really good progress. I can appreciate what you are doing. Some of those "back yard" fixes you mentioned might have been done on the floor when the boat was originally built. When I dismantled my Sabre I found a few Dutchmen, and lots of small wedges inserted between the frame and planking just to even things up all with original paint. From my understanding Century would hire student help during the summer months to work alongside the regular skilled woodworkers.
Last week I was cleaning up some rat holes in my garage and found a brass cutwater for my Century that I sold. Needs some work and plating. If any on the Century members are in need they can contact me.
