Holy crap has it really been 3 months since I posted last?!?!?!?! Well the blanks was finally dry enough to plane down to a 2" x 2". I wanted to leave it 2 x 2 so I can have more fudge room when shaping it, just in case. I should have taken a pic of the beast on the setup but I got so excited to get going and start planning I forgot!

Well anyway here are a couple pics of the setup with the meat packing plant rollers my dad had with the planer. Sure come in handy!

So now I need to cut the new old chines out of the 5200 bedding so I can use the bow piece as a pattern for the ne ones, then steam them in.

Slowly but precise. That's gotta make some noise in the neighborhood. Nice setup.
FWIW I've a friend who is doing a complete rebuild on a '56 Coronado. 6 years ago he asked me if he should go ahead with a rebuild cuz the boat was so cheap and he wanted to have something to take his two young daughters skiing etc. Well now the boat is just beginning to get bottom planks and the youngest of the girls will be graduating high school this coming spring. My Sabre took over 5 years off and on. It seems like you're right on schedule.

Your Century project is a list of every reason I'm NOT doing a wooden boat. That said, you're doing a great job on it and it'll be well worth the effort when you're done!
I love the old mahogany runabouts. i just know my limitations.

Bob, wasn't long ago I mentioned the friend who is rebuilding his Coronado. He sent me a picture of progress, this is about 5 years of work. Doing a complete rebuild. He'll probably be a grandfather before it's finished.

Well the chines were finally dry enough so two coats of CPES on the two frame sides, some 5200, bolts and they're bedded down now. Hopefully I'll be able to start shaping the next weekend.

Bob...it's looks great. Very nice joinery. I can't make any suggestions for improvement. From an aesthetic point of view, you might want to consider using the mahogany colored 5200. It looks better when viewed from the inside and if you're going to paint with bilge paint, it covers easier than white.

Lookin' good Robert. What was that fly on the wall hearing while you were clamping the bow? For me it seemed that no mater how long I steamed there was lots of springback.

Thanks guys!

Jan, yeah I used what the club was using, thought about the black or mahogany but it's about $5/6 more pure tube and that really adds up overall. I think the thick bildge paint should cover it ok......I hope. Plan on scraping the access 5200 off so it's very little to cove.

Cal, yep it's hard to see it but I used a ratcheting strap with two small boards clamped to it wouldn't slide forward. Pulled it tight in.

Bill, Actually I did number the originals so I know where to lay them to make patterns for the new ones. ;)

John, One thing you learn as a wood worker, is you can NEVER have too many clamps! lol

Bob:

Planking the sides is a bitch...no other way to describe it. I did manage to get it down to a good system but not before I messed up a couple of semi-expensive planks that took quite a while to make...cutting, planing, re-sawing, shaping, etc. Using the old planks for patterns will not work. At best, they're just a very rough approximation that will just cause you to ruin planks...like they did me. I'll be glad to walk you through my system if/when you think you need the help.

Of course, if you have a major supply of soft shell crabs and Dos Equis Amber, I'd consider coming up there and giving you a hand. (I am...the 2nd most interesting man in the world.)

Bob,

After watching the awesome talent and work you are doing I have indeed come to the conclusion I will stick the Scale Model Wooden Boats and my 1/1 scale models I will stick with my Harleys and Corvettes....With an occasional fiberglass boat tossed in.

I see there is a reason these old classic wooden boats demand so much money......They are a work of Art anywhere you look.

Great job,

Karsten

When you are finished it will be far better than when it was on a showroom floor. Some of these boats were built side by side with pattern parts assembled. When I rebuilt my sabre I was amazed by all the shims and wedges that were glued in and used to fair and straighten out the boards on the framing.

Jan, thanks I appreciate it. I had planned on only using the old ones as a rough idea. I plan on getting some thin cardboard and se it for pattern to exactly match what is now there. I'm with ya on the Dos Equis Amber just not on the crabs. ;)

Karsten, thank you I appreciate it! I too am a hugs Corvette fan but never had the money to get what I really want so it's a wood boat instead. ;)

Cal Yeah I keep having to tell myself that these things were produced pretty darn quick and I'm being way anal thn I really need too. lol

Jan,
The other trick is to do the sides first then do the bottom. That way you can use the chine to help clamp the planks to each other and the frames if necessary. Been conversing with the club guys and learning from their past experience. ;)

Bob...the cardboard will drive you nuts. Consider using cheapo 1/8" plywood. That's what I used to make patterns for the bottom planking on the Dee Wite.

I covered the bottom with 3/16 meranti plywood and then stapled the 1/8" ply patterns with 1/2" staples. If you don't push down too hard, the staples will stay proud and be easy to remove. Naturally, you need to label everything.

By the way, I did the side planking last because the owner originally didn't want to pay to have it replaced. The sides looked bad when the boat arrived but after the topsides was finished, they looked horrible. When I explained that there was nothing that I or anyone else could do to have the hull match the look and fit of the topsides, he relented. So, things were done backwards...and it wasn't fun.

Cool thanks, good idea. I'll have to get some cheapo 1/8" ply. I was thinkin of using the single layer cardboard not the corrugated type, don't know if that works better or not.

Yeah no fun doing the sides after the bottom! I'm sure there were plenty of explatives during that job. ;)

Well I have been busy on the boat but it's just been routing out the rabbets on the chines. I've gotten the side planking rabbets done and now I'm making up the temporary planks and fence for the bottom rabbets. I'll post pics of those when I get them done. I already posted the side plank rabbet pics before, on the other screwed up chines. lol good practice right?!?!?!

Anyway, I got a really really good deal on a 2000 Haul Rite trailer with disc brakes.

Sorry it's a little washed out in the one pic. It's a good trailer rated for 5000lbs and was set up for a 21'. Now I just need unbolt the back cross member and move it to it's forward position, pull the rollers and install bunks and I'm good to go. Those are the solid urethane rollers too, not cheap but a definite no no for woodies that reside on a trailer.

Nice score on the trailer. Perfect match. The bunk transition is fairly easy compared to what you are doing now. I'm growing old watching this. Salute!

Ok so I was able to get the fence built so I could rout the bottom plank rabbet on the chines. Here's the setup. I still have to do the close pass to the fence since the bit is 3/4" and the rabbet it about 1". I'll post more pics of the finish when done. Had to stop to get ready for the Super Bowl.

Supposed to be warmer to start the week so hopefully I'll be able to finish the routing after work.

Woot Wooot! Battens should be easy enough, a little twist but after what you've accomplished....
Just curious, how deep did you set your router? Enough to fair off I hope.

Actually it's pretty much to finish depth but I plan on planing the planks about 1/6" proud of a 1/2" for fairing in.

Ok so the repaired battens are on their second coat of CPES then 5200 next weekend I hope. the trailer didn't pass inspection because the brakes were dragging on the driver side and he couldn't get the cap off the master cylinder. Oh and a brake line rubbed a hole between my house and the inspection station!

So after looking into the issues the master cylinder is shot, the brake calipers won't push out past an 1/8" with the compressor and they don't make a rebuild kit for them as they've been replaced. So it was time to order a whole new disc brake kit since it's was pretty much the same priced everything will be new and last for a long time.

Got all the old planking down to figure out how much wood to get. This is what a 18' Resorter looks like when you flatten out the bottom and side planks.

Now I just have to figure out the best way to do the top most plank that goes under the covering board. (can't remember the name of it). Do I go with a 15" wide one as long as possible or 7" wide for about 10'ish then narrow. Not sure cuz the original has a two board on Port and three board on Starboard. It's hard to tell from the pic.

Bob. Some people see boards, I see progress. About the exact thing I did. Gives you a good opportunity to evaluate the boards and make new ones where needed. I found that all the stern ends on mine were not in good condition where the screws were. Keep on truckin'.

Looking good Bob! My hat's off to you, that sure is a lot of work. As for the brake issue, I was just talking to my neighbor the other day about this when he was complaining about paying for a 30k mile service on his car. They replaced the brake fluid, which he thought was completely unnecessary. So I explained, water gets into your brake fluid through condensation. It then settles to the lowest point, like water does in oil, into the calipers/wheel cylinders where it causes corrosion and failure. This is most evident in vehicles that sit for long periods, motorcycles, hobby cars, and trailers. And especially boat trailers where water can actually be pulled past the seals when, after a long drive, you plunge your hot calipers/ wheel cylinders into a cold lake and shrinkage draws the water in, just like wheel bearings do. I began flushing my brake fluid on everything about 25 years ago. I do it every 4 years on the cars, and more frequently on anything that sits. Since then, have NEVER had a hydraulic brake component failure.
